Quilts

Hi everyone. I've noticed a few people here use quite high-performance pads, like Expeds, Big Agness etc. Due to the fact that crushed insulation, especially down, doesn't insulate so well, do any of you use quilts instead of sleeping bags? I know the usage of quilts is quite high in the US. I also know that quilts generally are lighter than a full sleeping bag. Anyone here use quilts? Have any experience with them? Would it be worth trying one out? (Are they even available in SA? How feasible would it be to try make one).
I imagine in a lot of circumstances, bar the 'berg in certain seasons, one could get by quite safely with a reasonable pad and a quilt.

I don't know anyone local that uses them but you could check backpacker.com and outsidemag.com for test reports - just use their search functions on their sites. I usually find something there...
