Gaitors

What is the general feeling regarding the use of gaitors for hiking purposes?
I did a hike in the Magaliesberg this weekend and generally found them a nuisance, different story in the Berg though. But even then, on my last hike in the Mnweni area they didn't help to keep the water out(my boots were properly wet after 2km's of bundu bashing) - I think the water proofing had worn off.

If I'm wearing boots I wear gaiters. Especially if I'm wearing long trousers.
