I've completed all the georeferencing and have converted the maps into the formats required for OSMAnd, Oruxmaps and Alpine Quest. These all have free versions. PM me for more info. Here's an Alpine Quest video:

Hi all,
Its been a while since i have been on this site, so apologies if this has been discussed. I have a Garmin Dakota 20 and its serves its purpose. Has anyone hiked successfully in the Berg using an APP on iPhone? With technology, i wonder why Garmin or other GPS units still exist. I have done very basic research and find some websites that punt APP based GPS hiking. Some are free too.
Any comments are welcome, I'm keen to try hike with my Garmin Dakota and iPhone and see which performs better.

Hi Beard
I extensively use Osmand+ in the berg. Have done multiple overnight and day hikes on both the escarpment and little berg using Osmand. Works great for me. But I use it on an android platform. AndrewP Drakensberg map makes for an excellent addition to standard osm and vector maps.
Cheers

@Beard....I am from the old school and prefer map reading. However I do have Wikiloc on my cell phone and it works well with the off line map. This app is used when the visibility is poor or to check on your position. The cell battery lasts long in flight mode and I have a small battery bank with solar as a back up.

Hi Beard
I have successfully used an app (Gaia GPS) on my iphone 6 in the Berg and a few other areas, usually for close range navigation (finding caves, gullys, etc.). It has performed well, but I generally rely first on my map and second on the app. The satellite connection is a bit weaker than a dedicated GPS, however, and I have found it to be particularly sensitive to large rock faces. This would probably be phone specific though, and has not caused any great inconvenience as of yet.
