I just want to recommend these gloves which I used in the cold and rain on my last Drakensberg hike, they're called Showa Temres, made for Japanese fishing apparently. The hiking / climbing community have been talking about them: www.alpinesavvy.com/blog//showa-fishing-gloves-the-go-to-for-cold-and-wet
They're cheap if you're able to find them - easy to get in the USA from Amazon.com and probably other parts of the world, too. Probably not going to last forever, but these are actually 100% waterproof unlike gore-tex and other materials that wet out. They're also fleece lined which makes them warm. Think of a very thick dishwashing glove with fur inside, and rough texture for grip.
