Devils Peak via Knife's edge

Hi all,

My brother lives in Cape Town and has at more than one occation tried to summit Devils peak via knife's edge and failed due to getting lost on the trail. I will be visiting him over Easter and would like to do this hike with him. Has anyone recently done this and have a GPX that they could share? Any tips would also be handy.

Thanks

Would be happy to help - is it the final section to the Devil's Peak summit from the Minor Peak saddle that has given him trouble, or lower down on the Mowbray Ridge approach?

Hi Stijn,
I have no idea, as far as I can make out he got all the way to Knife's edge but didn't know what to do there and the exposure got to him so he rather turned around. I am not familiar with the route at all and would probably just follow my Garmin up there, but all advice would be appreciated!

Maybe good to share advice on both?

Ok cool - if he got all the way up to the Knife Edge, you follow directly along that exposed ridge until you get to the last climb up Minor Peak. Here there is a path that contours around the left of Minor Peak to reach the saddle with Devil's Peak, but rather ignore that (loose and exposed) and keep right instead, to scramble up the steep rocky section directly to the summit of Minor Peak.

From the Minor Peak summit, there is a path that descends steeply to the saddle between Minor Peak & Devil's Peak. When you get to this saddle, don't take the good path zig-zagging down to the right, but rather follow the overgrown path that goes straight up the steep grassy slope towards the Devil's Peak summit. This path gains about 50-100m vertically before getting to the final big cliffs that stop you from continuing to the summit. At the base of these cliffs, the path (and cairns) traverse out to the left, along a broad ledge which gets narrower. Just after you come around the corner (and are now above the Newlands side) there is a short scramble (marked with a cairn) to get up to the higher traverse ledge. It is quite easy to miss this and continue traversing along the lower ledge, which does work, but doesn't take you directly to the summit. After stepping up to the higher traverse ledge, keep following it along (narrow and exposed in places) in the direction of Table Mountain (with the Devil's Peak summit on your right and the Newlands suburbs on your left), until you get to a short steep gully on your right that you can scramble up to reach the summit beacon. This gully should be marked with a cairn as well.

I don't have my own GPS track for this route (as I've done some wandering along the incorrect routes before finding the best way
