Why do I love the mountains, and the Berg in particular :
- because It gives me an opportunity to live life as simple as possible, with only that what I carry on my back
- because it’s challenges and moods teach me about myself and my character
- because it brings peace to my soul, away from the hectic day to day life in the concrete jungle

To borrow a quote...

Because it is "a wild and a lonely place".

To quote my own:
To remove yourself from the insulation of daily modern life and the security it affords and place yourself in an environment of savage silence, violent beauty and raw volume, with friends who you unquestioningly trust with your life.
To be deafened by the silence and seperated for a time from the white noise of our urban existence.
To walk alone, filled with the trust in your own understanding, and trust in the power that created it.

To reach a point where your mind empties itself of the accumulated mass of daily life, and must concentrate instead on the sole effort of reaching the goal. To reach a point where your body responds only to your personal mantra, and your mind helps it ignore all discomfort to get it there.

"You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.
You're on your own, you know what you know.
You are the guy who'll decide where to go."

Why do we like hiking.

To start I believe we as avid sports men and women always strive to
Better our selves,to attain a greater level of fitness and top it
Over and over again.

Secondly,we as hikers are a different breed of animal
With an eternal instinct to face challenges that seem impossible
But with a little effort one can accomplish anything you set your
mind to.

To be physically able is a gift from the creator and we ought to
Be thankfull for the great creations he has given us to explore
For as long as we can, adventure is a calling from within and the
Wild places our playground..

This is why I like to hike

Oh and because I enjoy it

I think we like it because we have the capacity to.

There is a dimension to us humans that extends far beyond biological function and existence. We wouldn't find mountains attractive if we were mere organisms. It is something that stems from deep emotional and spiritual dimensions. Mountains evoke passions, dreams, yearnings of something greater than ourselves.

For me, at the core of it, a switch was flicked on inside. Many things in my childhood prepared for it, but it was something about my first overnight hike (the Bell Traverse), and watching a raptor glide along the steep slopes below Twins Cave and the glowing sunrise from Bell Cave with the silhouette of the Cathkin and others. Something that is spoiled if you try describe it.

On top of that you may catch me saying that I enjoy it in the mountains because of their natural beauty, because of the challenge of climbing them, because of the adrenalin-inducing exposure, and because of the amazing camaraderie that grows between those that venture out together.

I cannot pretend that I am a better person for climbing them, nor that I enjoy lasting peace of fulfillment because of it. I don't. But I can say that life thrusts through my veins because of them and reminds me that I am alive, both inside and out. Without them, the mundane of the everyday intensifies. With them, whether I am in them or just dreaming from the last trip or dreaming of the next, or chatting about them on a forum, life feels a lot brighter.
