DVD - The Beckoning Silence

For mountaineers, climbers and the armchair mountaineer/backpacker the Eiger Nordwand, or North Wall holds a macabre fascination. It is a mountain that has claimed more than its fair share of climbing deaths, right back to the late 30's when it was considered to be the last problem in the Alps.

The Beckoning Silence tells the story of the second attempt on the mountain by a combined German and Austrian team, all of which failed to return alive. The name Toni Kurz might mean something to some on the forum. It is told in part by Joe Simpson and is beautifully shot with the story been relived by swiss guides dressed up in the climbing gear of the day. The cameras have been able to get the viewer right into the action using amazing wide angle shots and breathtaking scenery. The huge drops and terrible weather while filming give you an idea of how desperate things became for Toni Kurz and his fellow climbers.

Fo Joe Simpson, who read the story of their climb when fourteen years of age, it told a story of courage under adversity that inspired him to take up climbing. It is kind of ironic that both he and Toni Kurz experienced a similar situation, one to die, and the other to walk away. It has also caused him to rethink his view of climbing, and the risks that he is prepared to take, now that he is a little older and wiser. Definitely a must to see.

Intrepid, please could you put the image on your book and dvd link.

For those interested, keep a lookout in the rotating book banners for "The White Spider" by Heinrich Harrer (of Seven Years in Tibet fame), about the first ascent. There are also banners for Joe Simpson's "Touching The Void" book and DVD.
