The Cordillera del Paine is the centerpiece of the park. It lies in a transition area between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes. The park is located 112 km (70 mi) north of Puerto Natales and 312 km (194 mi) north of Punta Arenas. The park borders Bernardo O'Higgins National Park to the west and the Los Glaciares National Park to the north in Argentine territory

There is a route on the central Tower of Paine famously called the South African route. First climbed in 1973/4 its a hard 30 pitcher graded A4/5.10.
The team was made up of Paul Fatti, Mike Scott, Art Mc Garr, Mervin Prior, Roger Fuggle and Richard Smithers - familiar names in Berg rock climbing too.
It took 30 years for the second ascent to happen - fittingly by a South African team.
The route was then freed for the first time in 2009 over a 13 day period.
One of the foremost South African climbers, Phil Lloyd was killed in this region.
Amongst the things Phil did here was to open two routes, El Caballo de Diablo (The Horse of the Devil) on the North Tower, and Planet Earth to Pisco Control on Paine Chico with Paul Pritchard.
