Good day guys
I'm new to the site and have been through the forums looking for something similar to this. I couldn't find anything but if a thread exists please point me there.
I'm looking for somewhere where one can hike and camp safely in small groups. In particular where one can practice a little bushcraft, possibly spot and photograph game, camp/sleep under the stars and not have to worry too much about 2 legged threats. I'd also like it to be relatively remote (i.e. no day walks coming passed while you're there).
I stay in Gauteng (unfortunately) but am open to suggestions.
Does any one know of such a venue or am I asking too much?
Many thanks
David

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Welcome to the forum David.
What immediately comes to mind is the Wolkberg, which would be suited to your location. It is considered to be a rugged, mountain wilderness area. Lots of rough bush, good fitness level and navigational skills required, and not a very well established trail network. I am not sure what the security situation is up there though.
I don't know the Cape that well, but I'm sure something down there would fit the bill (Wolfberg, Cederberg?).

Hi David,
I have spent a reasonable amount of time in the Wolkberg, and it definitely has all the things you seek. It is about 4-6 hours drive from JHB depending on the roads. Many times whilst hiking there we never came across any other people, and if we did, they were always of the hiking variety and never the local variety.
I have travelled extensively all over RSA in many of its wilderness areas and have found the Wolkberg to be the most remote and pristine, and importantly for me the safest.
As Intrepid suggests one does need a number of good outdoor skills, and good fitness levels are paramount. The only good map available of the area is a 1:20000 topo map, and it would be wise to brush up on your navigation skills.
A few of the trips we made I never took a tent and opted to sleep under the stars which is an amazing experience. We even tried our hand at a few lean-too shelters.
If you are considering going please let me know, I would be very interested in joining your expedition.
Regards,
HC
