Multiday hikes allowed for a solo hiker ?

Which recommended multiday hikes can I do as a solo hiker in South Africa ?
I'm for instance interested in coastal hikes in Kwazulu Natal or Eastern Cape province. Also for good one day hikes.
Thank you, Pierre

Hi Pierre

I will try answer both of your posts here.
Drakensberg hikes, you are looking long in advance so there won't be many hikes already planned for that time, but keep a look out on places like MCSA (Mountain Club of SA) when they add hiking calendars which are for 3 or 4 months at a time.
Of if you post here close to the time you will find hikes to join in.
Your main risks with solo Berg hiking is injury and getting lost, so rather join up with hikers experienced in the berg.

Coastal hikes, I would not recommend doing these solo, but there are lots of guides that offer these type of hikes, so search around for those

Hi Pierre, and welcome to VE.

We have two fairly long threads on the forum already which will be very relevant to you. Please have a read through these:
General help for overseas visitors to the Berg
Solo hiking in the Berg

No doubt you will be aware of the crime in South Africa, and this may be one of the reasons you are asking about hikes which can be done alone. One of our members took the trouble to write about some basic information regarding security for overseas visitors:
Safety for International Visitors to South Africa
It was written as a result of an overseas visitor who got some help planning a solo hike in the Drakensberg on this forum. On arrival in South Africa, he never made it to the Drakensberg however because he was mugged in Johannesburg, and he changed his travel plans a a result. His story can be read in the "General help for overseas visitors to the Berg" thread mentioned earlier.

Now about your question, can you give us more specifics of which areas and trails interest you? If you provide us with more specific questions it will be easier for people to respond.

Lastly, please stay in touch with us on this forum and let us know how your planning is going. We would like very much for your experience of South Africa and the Drakensberg to memorable and free from anything negative!

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

I would caution against solo hikes on the coast. Your chances of being robbed / murdered / raped is pretty high.

If you want peace of mind during your solo hike i would suggest Malolotja in Swaziland. Its very beautiful and safe also. I have hiked here solo, and also just with the misses.

There are poachers but they keep their distance. You will find waterfalls, leopard, elephant if you look hard enough and amazing mountain views.

I am planning to take my family on a Wild Coast (Eastern Cape) hike with  Wild Tours  sometime next year. They were recently featured in Go! Magazine, seem to be legit and willing to tailor the hike to suit your needs.
