Happy New Year VE members, I am wondering if any of our VE members have hiked/climbed up Bamboo mountain?
I am here in the berg on holiday with my family and this mountain has grabbed me and taken me in, I don't have any hiking stuff with me so I am wanting to come back and have a go at it,
Does anyone have info for me on it?
Best access point?
Any GPS co ordinate s? And how best to tackle it?
I have attached a pic of it from where I am staying

What area is this?

@Smurfatefrog, Met Eish Ja,
The pic was taken normally not sure why it posted upside down,
It is in the southern berg, apparently on the Drak Gardens Road, tomorrow I'm gonna go and see if I can do some scouting.

Excuse the terrible quality of these photos, most where taken with a cell phone.
If I'm correct its this one from the Drak Gardens Rd:
I always had Bamboo Mountain and Garden Castle the other way round, but having a look at the map I see I was wrong. It seems that this Garden Castle - the one you look straight at down Mashai Pass:
From the road it looks walkable from the north side:
It seems to be on someone's farm, but unfortunately I don't have a photo where you can actually read the name:
The EKZN map doesn't seem to show the Bamboo Mountain, only the Little Bamboo Mountain which is further north and closer to the Berg.
If I am correct, this is the layout of the peaks as seen from the top of Sandleni Pass:
There's some info on it on this site .

@Ghaz, thanks, from where I am staying I am look at the south facing slope and that looks do-able I have taken photos of the way it think it could be climbed. There is definitely a gully that is accessible from the view I have.
There must be a way to access it without having to go on someone's farm.
If someone has better info that would be awesome, as it would be great to do it over a Saturday/Sunday.

In the good old days we used to walk back up the Giant's Cup Trail (in the direction of the Mzimkhulwana Hut) from the Drak Gardens road to the plateau between Bamboo and Little Bamboo mountains. From there it is fairly obvious and straightforward to get to the top of Bamboo Mt. We used to leave our vehicles at the side of the road at the point where the Trail path emerges (about 1-2 km before the Mzimkhulu River bridge), but nowadays you might not see your vehicle again if you do this. Probably best to get a ride to that point and get picked up again when you return. One could also take a day walk from Mzimkhulwana Hut but I think it is too far to get to Bamboo Mt. from Cobham Forest Stn. and back in a day.

After Bobby's comment I realised it'll be on the Cobham map. Its about 9km from Winterhoek Hut on the Giants Cup Trail, plus the about 6km it would take to get to the top. Considering the lack of altitude change it could probably be done in a day. Overnighting the night before at one of the nearby lodges or at Winterhoek Hut (not sure where you would park for the Hut though) it sounds doable. The peak is only 2239m, so its only about 600m of altitude gain. Although without a path from the plateau to the summit, that 12km middle bit may be slow. 30km in a day is never easy.

The Bamboo Mountain and the Little Bamboo Mountain from Rhino Pass. You can see the way up quite clearly.

We went up Bamboo a few months ago from the Drak Gardens Road where our house is.
It's seriously steep and there are a few scrambly bits but the views are epic. Very cool rock formations, a keyhole and tarns up on top. We came back down the North side to meet up with the tar road at the top of "Caravan Hill" if anyone knows where that is. That's likely the fastest route up or down.
We also climbed Garden Castle a few weeks later. Awesome to be on top of those big rocks on top and there's cool cave / over hang too.
Very snakey the day we went up - saw a Berg Adder, Skaapsteker and another LBJ.
