Hodgson's South or North Peak?

Hey everyone!

I am looking to climb from Cobham via GX cave (stay overnight there) and summit either Hodgson's North or South peak. I will then come back via Pholela Cave (my group is 7 people so I am opting for the larger caves) and finish back at Cobham on the third day. If the weather is not kind my backup is just to get onto the Hub and then make our way to Pholola from there. I wanted to know if anyone has done Hodgson's before and can give me some advice on whether to choose the South or the North Peak? I understand the South Peak is more of a walk whereas the North Peak is a bit more technical but what is the difficulty of this section? Also I know that both of these peaks are in SA but will we at any stage cross the border (is it recommended that we carry passports just in-case?).

Thanks very much for your thoughts!

Nick ;)

Hi Nick and welcome to VE

South Hodgesons is the slightly technical one. Do a search on VE for it and you will find Intrepid's writeup on how to find the way through the rock band. North Hodgesons is simply a walk.

In the interests of full disclosure - I haven't done either myself, but have had a good look at the north peak.

You can't get up either without entering Lesotho. Usually you wouldn't bother with a passport, but seeing as you will be very close to Sani Pass (where there is a border post), perhaps it is a good idea to carry one.

Thanks that's excellent! Ah right I got them confused there :silly: . I will check out that post and then make a decision from there. Also thanks for the recommendation on passports. Probably just the safer route just to have them!

Hi Nic09 and welcome to VE!

This is the thread that ghaz was referring to:
www.vertical-endeavour.com/forum/9-drakensberg-climbing/250-hodgesons-south-scrambling-route.html

Hodgeson's South is a more of a pleasing summit, both in the way you get to it, and the actual summit itself makes it feel like you have climbed a peak. You do get some nice views of the Sani area from Hodgeson's North though.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.
