Eastman's Peak

Hi everyone,

I'm heading out on a hike starting at Cathedral Peak/Didima offices on the 20th. We have two route options to reach the top, both ascending via Organ Pipes, but differing slightly in the approach to the pass and beyond. However, a few members of our group have recently sustained injuries, so we're unsure if we'll make it to the top. :(

In the meantime, I'm exploring alternative plans in case we stay around contour level. Gatberg has always intrigued me, but with only 3.5 days and a predetermined camp at the old lookout on the first night, it seems like it would be a big rush to summit and return, potentially making the experience less enjoyable.

Another option I've considered is Eastman's Peak, which is much closer to the Cathedral Peak side. I haven't been able to find definitive threads on this in the forum, but I was wondering if it would be feasible to sleep on the ridge (west of the peak near the path) and then traverse around to the east side to summit for those who are up for it. From what I've seen in pictures and by studying the contours, the east side appears to be the most hike-able. This would be attempted without packs.

That said, I’d prefer not to take ropes or gear with us, and I definitely don’t want to face a situation where abseiling is required. If it's a C-grade scramble or similar, it should be doable.

Has anyone scouted potential routes up Eastman's Peak, or better yet, climbed it? I'd really appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

I did a day hike from Monks Cowl to the Didima River and back last month as part of my project to hike the entire countour path. There's plenty of spots to camp around Eastmans Peak, just water will be an issue. I don't remember seeing water anywhere near there. I did wonder about getting up the peak, it doesn't look particularly difficult, but you don't know till you reach the rockband and can actually see the line.

Looking forward to your writeup about the climb, please take lots of photos!
