I very recently spent a night in Lower Injasuthi cave for the first time. Really great cave: good protection, high and flat roof, flat ground, many trees in front, and not too far from water. There are also a few great pools and a bit of a supertube a little lower down in the river - you might need a helmet though! What surprised me though was that the cave had Bushman paintings. I'm not surprised about the fact that they are there; I mean, Battle cave IS just around the corner. But that we're allowed to sleep there! The paintings have also been badly damaged (which might be the reason for \"sacrificing\" the cave). Anybody have any thoughts?

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

I think it is a case of the cave being "sacrificed". The paintings are so badly damaged and the cave has been so well established as an overnight spot. This is also the case with Bushman's Cave at Bushman's Neck (the paintings are so badly messed up one really has to look very carefully). Also the case with Leopard Cave at Ndedema.

Hi, I'm taking a group of friends and thier kids up the berg in 2 weeks. The challenge we have is too many people want to come. Does anybody know if we can fit 14 people in the lower injisuthi cave? I know its rated 10-12. So I'm assuming that 14 is too many. Is there a flat area at the cave we can use for a tent? I remember a flat space by the pool but it's too far from the cave. Any suggestions
Thanks Si

12 is the maximum allowed group in the Drakensberg, even if the cave/campsite can take 500 people.
So Injisuthi should not let you have a group exceeding 12

Hey Si
Like Smurfatefrog said - max group size is 12, please stick to it. The point is too minimise impact on the environment and popular caves (like LIC) really suffer with the toilet situation (especially if newbies aren't informed on how to manage their waste, etc.).
Enjoy tho

I have an easy solution for your "too large group" problem. Simply tell everyone that they are in for a march up to the summit in one day due to a change of plan, as all participants will now overnight at Upper Injasuthi cave instead

Maximum 12 group... Thanks for this info and in my ignorance I have never taken note of this. it has been a big concern for myself considering the impact of what larger groups has on the environment. I have taken a group of 18 on 2 or three occasions and this has played a concern in my mind and never liked a group this big. I will certainly remember this.
This however brings to mind the fact that I have often come across VERY large groups. One in my most recent hike with at least 30 people. One cannot imagine the impact a group such as this has when they camp out for a day or two with 12/13 tents with some of them 4 and even 5 man tents. porters and all. This group came as a surprise at the top of organs. According to the Mountain register there were no such group in the area. They did approach from Cathedral as their branded vehicles were parked at the hikers area.
Often also I have seen huge organised hikes by some Spiritual organisations and the biggest I have seen was well over a 100 camping out in a valley.
This does seem to be on the increase and dont know if others on this forum has encountered the same. With the rise in this, and seemingly unchecked occurrence and growth, this has to be manged better.

HI all, just a quick update. 12 is certainly the max for this cave, with all of the rain in the berg at the moment you would not be able to fit a single extra person in this cave.
