“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” ― Mahatma Gandhi (this is backed up by the global income per capita being approximately $70 000 per person)
“There is something fundamentally wrong in treating the Earth as if it were a business in liquidation.” ― Herman E. Daly
“If civilization is to survive, it must live on the interest, not the capital, of nature.” ― Ronald Wright
Unfortunately I have done too much research on the world economy to actually be optimistic enough to think the 2008 recession is over. The economic state of the world is really scary right now - there's a bit of meat between the massive bubbles that are present in the global economy. If we look at historical patterns and the current state of the world economy - the prospects for the next 10 years are actually quite scary.
For those who don't want to see what I am talking about, just ignore this part I know most people switch off when I get onto this topic (what I say is mostly based on a few papers written by economists predicting the 2008 recession - so they are quite old papers, but have been correct so far)...
- The first half of the great depression has had a similar pattern to the one we just went through. If history repeats itself, we have some really tough times ahead. Note that, once again, the great depression was broken by WW2
- Current world: USA's national debt levels have reached some insane number of trillion dollars. Money is being printed at an insane rate and therefore, under the laws of supply and demand, the value should drop. This has been patched up by the fact that all international currencies are also devaluing - following USA's lead, but not to the same extent - and of course demand is maintained by the world trading oil in US$. The amount of debt that will never be paid is probably well past what will be.
In summary - the current global financial paradigm is a big box of dynamite waiting to be ignited, and if history is anything to go by, these explosions are usually followed by a major war...

www.news24.com/Green/News/AfriForum-looks-into-fracking-corruption-20140404AfriForum and the Treasure the Karoo Action Group have expressed deep concerns over the fact that Bundu Gas & Oil Exploration has been given certain rights in the Karoo.
..
According to a 2010 report, Bundu’s managing director reported to his shareholders that their application to become involved in the fracking initiative in the Karoo had been denied. He however reported that by leveraging the company’s connections in South Africa, they could make a new application over a larger area.
What may be shocking to note is that the second application has already been accepted by the Petroleum Agency of Southern Africa.

There is also a petition running on Avaaz against fracking in SA:

What happens in the Karoo will likely set the precedent for what happens in the Drakensberg region.
I'd like to call on the South African public to inform themselves about fracking. Avoid simply having a knee-jerk reaction about it. Read about it, look at the facts, think about the pros and cons. And if arrive at your own conclusion that it should be stopped, then join the campaign against it.
All too often we are too lax and uninformed about issues until it is too late. Like the Gauteng eToll issue, attempts are made to sneak these kind of things quitely through the public consultation phase. And in addition, did anyone else see the pro-fracking video released by Shell which is a sponsored post on Facebook recently? It seems to be aimed at a South African audience.

ASL, best we can do is to spread the word and 'educate' people on the negatives of fracking.
I downloaded GasLand (a documentary about fracking) and other fracking videos & documentaries, burned them on discs and gave to my family & friends to watch - they all are against it now.

African Conservation Trust (ACT) is quite involved in the fight against fracking in the Berg. This is their general Facebook page:

And this one is specifically for the campaign against fracking in the Berg:
www.facebook.com/NoFrackingTheDrakensberg
As in the campaign against the cableway, VE may make an alliance with ACT in this regard too.
