Good one ST2, I was going to go with ants as well. There is a chap who may be able to give a 100% id and that is a Hamish Robertson who is head of Entomology at Iziko in CT. And the verdict was: Crematogaster ant nest - the ones that cock their tails (abdomens) in the air when alarmed. So ST2 was spot on.
