Warning about photographing of vultures

The following was posted on KZN Wildlife's Facebook page :

We have had some problems at our feeding site at Giants Castle where photographers are attaching wires to bones and nailing these in the ground so that the birds don't remove the bones/meat from the site while they photograph them. The larger birds, particularly bearded and cape vultures are pulling the nails out of the ground when they grab the bone and are flying off with them. Since bearded vultures swallow bones, they will probably swallow the nail and wire with the bone which could cause major injuries.

Please would photographers desist from these practices. The attached poster should be circulated to all bird clubs etc. - For the Vulture's sakes.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

DISGUSTING!!!! It is not enough that these new digital cameras and the feeding site make it easier to shoot huge amount of images, thus increasing the odds of getting a good shot, they now have to make their odds even greater, but at the risk of killing the very reason that they have gone there in the first place. How short sighted, stupid and very disappointing.

What is wrong with some people …absolutely selfish …. are we so lacking in caring these days ….bad enough we restrict their habitat, now we go into that small space … trying to lure them by ‘bait’ just for the better sighting or photos or ‘the rush’ …. sometimes adjusting their behaviour by doing so …

We do it in so many different animal environs : incl. shark cage diving, Great Migrations … why do we need these ‘in your face’ interactions ?!! Education and enjoyment thereof needn’t mean infringing !!

Just leave them be … and marvel at their natural motion and their uniqueness …we have so little left in any case …

these guilty photographers need to be tied down so that the vultures and jackals have a fair chance.

I will see if Getaway mag would put something in there as a shaming and warning to photographers.
