While hiking we often see or hear signs of the wild' around us. It would be nice to know what wildlife is still out there and has been seen in recent years. We all come across grazing livestock on top as well as the shepherds motley collection of dogs (derived from multiple breeds). This thread is geared for sightings of free roaming wildlife encountered.
My experiences so far include Grey Rhebok, Eland, klipspringer, baboon, jackal, hares & dassies. Otters have been seen lower down.
We have also spotted various snakes, mice or shrews and lizards.

We saw a pair of Klipspringer high up on one of the escarpment ridges this weekend.
Cant remember which ridge. Maybe Ghaz can.

They must be very cunning or very fast or both to survive up there and not end up in the pot!

It was on Friday, right? I think we saw them towards Popple on our way up Judge. Not 100% sure though - I remember it happening, just not sure when.
Definitely seen plenty of baboons on top. If you want to include insects and birds I think we can add plenty to the list. We had plenty of moths and bees on top this weekend (not used to seeing this). Also butterflies on Corner Pass. Quite a few large raptors, but I am terrible at identifying these.
Rats are definitely around above contour path from time to time.

Took the photo on the left hand side, slap bang next to the rock cairn on top of Mafatle peak, Goldengate, 2834m ASL (As the red arrow on the right hand side photo indicates). Clear indication of continuous presence of rhebok on the peak. Quite fitting given the Afrikaans name for this peak....
This peak is basically inaccessible from 3 of its five sides, and the other two access routes are steep and tough. Well...for me at least, and most other humans. The incredible mobility and agility of this little buck is astounding.
The peak is extremely wind exposed, but my theory remains that they stay up here at night, given the difficulty of access and exposure, so as to remain out the way of jackal and even leopard which is still spotted here irregularly. Tough little creatures, and one of my favorites.
