Poaching in the Drakensberg

At first, I thought this thread was a misunderstanding of the recent helicopter crash with the Witness having chosen a particularly dubious headline for the story about egg hunters (a part of the scientific effort to harvest eggs from the bearded vulture nests since parents lay 2 eggs, but only raise one chick, and so the eggs would be hand cultivated and reared to be released back to the wild), but having read the article fully, I am shocked.

Thanks for sharing this with us Richard, I will make it my personal goal to follow up with all involved, including the Park Manager to find out whether there are ways to counter this scourge in Vergelegen. Many years back when I was last in Vergelegen with Intrepid, we noted the large number of Eland in the area, but also a growing number of drug paths from Lesotho. It would be useful to conduct a follow up to compare the population numbers, and the images of the paths we took then with now (forgive my scientific mind rambling).

It may be useful to consider shifting some of our anti-poaching units from other areas in the Berg to this hotspot.

Again, thanks for bringing this to light. I will follow up.

I have sent a report to KZN Wildlife with a good response. The channels have been opened to deal with this situation and lets give KZN Wildlife the opportunity to sort it out without harassment from the press! If they don't do anything then we can go to further lengths to expose this to the general public and more!

I think that this is a wise approach, Richard. It is better to let EKZNW deal with this directly without distraction.

Hi Richard,

Thank you for highlighting your concerns with regard to the illegal hunting at Vergelegen.

I am meeting with the staff at Vergelegen this coming week to see how we can address the matter.

I will keep you informed.

@ Richard, domsmooth & John Crowson

I am glad that there is the energy and concern to try to sort this out. I hope that there is a favourable outcome for the sake of the wildlife in the area.

Hi Richard

Sad news.

I can confirm that the area which you say they were using as a lookout point is the same spot from where I was shouted at from on a solo hike in June.

When I spoke to Thabo about the incident he said that there is a cave there.

@Richard

Have you heard anything back from John Crowson yet?

This hunting must surely be supplying the black market bush meat trade. The proximity to the newly tarred upper Sani road to Mokhotlong cannot be ignored. I would bet that the meat is getting transported by teams from permanent hunting camps stationed at the top of the used passes and moved down the river valleys that connect with the tarred road and then transported on vehicles to wherever.

I am definitely with some of the other members on the forum and agree that it needs to be made public and pressure put on KZN Wildlife.

At the end of each day the Rangers at Vergelegen and those in the KZN Wildlife hierarchy must justify why they are there. They will be judged by the condition of the park...full stop!!!!!! Do they have the "Virunga" passion to stop the poaching. It is now 9 days since I first contacted them and the challenge to protect the wildlife at Vergelegen is in their hands.

Received this reply today:

Hi Richard,

Spoke to the Field Rangers today about it.

There are plans in place and will discuss further with the OIC Dumisani Mpontshane once he returns from time off.

Regards,

John

Thanks for the update Richard.

We can only hope that the measures implemented are swift and decisive before the situation becomes too critical.
