Rainfall for 2012

Rainfall for 2012 was created by intrepid
Here's another question for the meteorological theme on this forum.

How much rain has fallen in the Maloti-Drakensberg region this summer? Does anyone have access to such figures? Since I haven't been out there much recently I don't have a feel for how much rain has fallen this year. How strong are the rivers flowing? Haven't heard much in this regard.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

I don't know the numbers, but I do have some pics that may or may not give an indication, both taken on 25 Feb 2012. I have never seen either river before so I am not sure if they where full or empty by normal standards, but I do know that I had to take my shoes off to cross the Didima River due to how high the water level was.

This was taken on the path in Lesotho that goes to the Yodelers Cascades, about 2km South of Ndumeni Dome, about 1km before you reach those 2 Basotho huts:

This is the Didima River just before its confluence with the Thlanyako River, by the Didima Campsite:

Thanks ghaz. I know that pool very well. The rivers are no doubt flowing nicely, but I still don't get the impression that a lot of rain has fallen in comparison to other years, and haven't heard any reports of exceptionally swollen rivers in the Berg. My impression is subjective however, since I'm baking up here in the North West and my garden isn't looking particularly happy.

Here are some satellite derived estimates of rainfall since early summer.
First, anomaly (anomaly=total for this season - long term mean). Negative anomalies are drier than normal.

and the percentage of normal (so 100% shading = average rainfall for the season so far when compared to the long term mean, 50% = half of expected)

So far the season has been much drier than usual. Surprising because it is a La Nina year which is, on average, wet in southern african summer rainfall region.

Thanks mnt_tiska, so that confirms my suspicions.

In oz though, La Nina has been very pronounced the last 3 years with floods in Queensland last year Feb and now in New South Wales this Feb/March. I always thought that it affected both South Africa and Australia to the same degree each season, perhaps not. Climate is a hard thing to track and predict.

I went and checked the February rainfall totals for Underberg for the past 5 years:

Feb 2008- 147mm
Feb 2009- 236mm
Feb 2010- 115mm
Feb 2011- 261mm
Feb 2012- 82mm

So pretty dry this year indeed! I guess the ice falls wont be too spectacular in 2012..

Durban was also quite dry in Feb, but March is certainly making up for any shortfalls. I suspect its also the case for the southern berg, although I don't think they've had as much as down here in the last 10 days
