Cathedral Peak Hotel vs Champagne Castle Hotel? was created by Havoc69
Morning All.
I want to book a weekend away on the 17th of June and have either cathedral peak hotel or champagne castle hotel in mind.
Any views on the following:
1. General Hotel stuff, food, accomodation etc. (heard that Champange castle is bettter all round but would like to make sure)
2. Better Location?
3. Day Hikes and what we can see?
4. Big thing for me!!!, road conditions to either place.
5. More likely to see snow in June if any?
Thanks for the help.

Also see my reply in the other thread
1. Take your wife on a proper berg experience, go stay in a cave
2. Yes, as mentioned, lots more to do within 15km
3. For Champagne check out Monks Cowl hikes, there are some nice ones
4. Yes, Champagne road is in good condition, you won't have any hassles
5. You might get lucky, but if anything there might just be some on the peaks

Hi Havoc,
I've been at both hotels but have only slept over at Cathedral Peak. Difficult to say which is better in terms of hotel, food etc, not sure. I think Champagne Castle is smaller, and they cater specifically for guests in terms of food. Cathedral Peak is open to day visitors in terms of food and seems to be busier. I think Cathedral Peak has more to offer the guests in terms of activities on the premises, but on the other hand the immediate area that the other hotel is in, has more to offer.
In terms of Berg areas, Cathedral Peak is a personal favourite so I have a bias towards that. I've also spent way more time at that hotel than at Champagne Castle Hotel. Cathedral Peak area has more variety in terms of day walks, many valleys and Little Berg walks to choose from that are very different from each other. The variety at Monks Cowl is a little less and tends to be more in one area. If you are only wanting to do 1 or 2 walks then this is not a problem.
The road is definitely better to Champagne Castle. The Cathedral Peak road does have potholes and is a bit windy. It passes through a rural area, which can be quite interesting. Champagne Castle road passes through plantations and has touristy road-side stops.
Hope this helps.

We have decided to go to champagne castle this weekend and can’t wait. Is there any day walks you would suggest as I am not sure what the hotel would offer as “guided” walks. We are more than comfortable doing a 10Km or 4 to 5 hour walk medium to hard but still fairly new to the trail walking thing. I think the hotel only offer shorter “guided” walks but not sure.
I also heard about the safety issues in the mountain and now the rabies outbreak. Anything we should take into special consideration and places to avoid?
Thanks again.

The hotel offers a decent range of walks, even scrambles up Sterkhorn and Amphlett, and a multi-day trip up Champagne Castle.
A good walk for you would be to head straight up behind the hotel to the Matterhorn, then across to Breakfast Stream and back via The Sphinx and Crystal Falls. You can make a detour to Blind Man's Corner to make the walk longer if you want. Other shorter day walks would be to Nandi's Falls and Makulumane Rock.
I don't think rabies will be a major issue for the areas where you are going. Don't touch any dogs though, and maybe not even any of the other animals at the hotel.

I know this is a bit late. I have stayed at both hotels a few times. Both are good and are expensive. Cathedral peak has this colonial feel. Two great pubs and it caters well for children. It has a beautiful view point of the mountain and it's one of my favorite things to have a sun downer in winter with a massive log fire. The food in both hotels is buffe style. I personally prefer Champange Castles food but you won't be disappointed with either. The rooms are all great in both hotels. Champange Castle does have a few redone rooms that are really lunxurious and an absolute treat to stay in. Personally I prefer Champange Castle hotel. Champange Castle also now offers self catering chalets. Both hotels offer guided walks.
