Google have created a backpack with cameras and hard-drive for capturing "street view" 360 degree type views of remote areas...

Will be interesting if anyone in the Berg hiking community is contacted or participates - possibilities for getting a full preview of passes or experiencing the full GT from the comfort of your computer screen...

Shew, thats pretty cool! I guess this would still be many years away for SA seeing as they are still far from completing Streetview for the globe...

I know SA got fast-tracked for that due to the 2010 World Cup.

It would be awesome for hike planning, GE is already so useful...

I feel sorry for the poor person who has to do Ships Prow Pass with all that extra weight...

To get an idea of how it would look, the 360° panorama that is on Google Earth, on the Langalibalele ridge is a great example!

I heard about this recently too and inevitbaly thought how this would work for the Berg. Very interesting project with lots of potential and could be very informative. I would not lug that camera along on a volunteer basis though!

The is a side of me that is reluctant too. It seems very "invasive". I'm not sure I would like every part of the Berg caught up in detailed film that way. Seems to dampen the lure and the mystery.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Briefly discussed last year as well, mods perhaps these threads could be merged?
