Snow Depth High Berg

It would be interesting to know how deep the snow is on top of the high berg. Traveling up to Estcourt this morning I took some photo's and from my telephoto lens the slopes around the Tent and Hawk south of Giants would seem to be between 4 to 6 foot deep or even deeper - would be tough and slow going even impossible to walk out. Intrepids sat image shows Lesotho covered entirely with snow. Incredible the power of Nature

I've been looking at the satellite image from 3 days after the big snowfall of July 2011 vs the image of 3 days after Tuesdays snowfall (today's image)

There seems to be significantly more snow left this time, which can only mean the overall average depth is deeper this year. That is pretty interesting because last year the snow on the mountains was VERY deep!

At 2450m on the south facing ridge of Langies (that flat bit before the waterfall) the snow was about 30cm deep, the north face of Giant's Castle is packed with snow, so the top is probably hectically covered...

Went up Ntonjalane on Thursday ,the snow on the upper reaches of the pass was about 40cm deep, but on the final traverse and up the gully was between waist and chest deep in places, making it very hard going.

With just 100m in vertical height left before the summit the decision was made to turn back.
So another epic day in the berg ,up and down a pass in a day, with pristine weather and stunning views and lots of snow.

Just got back from Amphi Theater, a lot of wind blown snow drifts after heavy winds on top of the berg. Some snow drifts up to a meter deep. Climbed up to crows nest cave was done in waist deep snow. Lost of ice on the path around Sentinal, snow melting quickly today and high winds making a lot of spin drift on the snow fields.

Will post more pics later.

Geordie & I just got back from a super hike up Grays over the weekend. Snow from the Sphinx upwards on Thursday - covered at keith Bush Camp and just got better as we climbed! Was nice bumping into Stijn and his group too - on the same mission as us, to get to the top....cresting on Friday we floundered through deep snowdrifts to our camp. See report and pics later!
