Hi,

I would like to Hike in the Drakensberg with my two dogs. Preferably a 3 day hike or 2. I have heard that the Mnweni area does allow dogs but you should be carefull of the tribes and their dogs. I spoke to the Mnweni cultural centre and they also said dogs are welcome but be carefull. Has anyone here Hiked the Drakensberg with their dogs and is there other areas that I can do this, does not only have to be the Drakensberg but would be nice. Your help would be much appreciated.

KZN wildlife has a strict no-dogs policy, so you wouldn't be allowed dogs anywhere else in the Berg.

Thank you very much. That was very informative and scary.
Am I right in saying the Mnweni area is not a national park and that is why they allow dogs?
So if I hike in that area I would be pretty stupid.

Correct, Mnweni is owned by the local communities, although there are talks about getting it included as part of KZN Wildlife.

Most wildlife and nature reserves wont allow dogs, so not sure what areas you can find for anything multi-day

They allow dogs there because it is a like any other suburb in the world. When and if it becomes part of KZN Wildlife or the heritage park, then that will become an interesting situation.

As far as hiking there, it is reasonably safe. You certainly don't need dogs for protection and would likely have the local pooches a bit cheesed off...i would not take dogs along with me  I also would not recommend hiking in the area alone as it is remote and very wild, but also my favourite part of the berg. There is plenty of info on this site about hikes in that area.
