Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Has anyone hiked in the Busingata Valley? If so where did you park you cars? I've heard of people leaving theirs at a local homestead before (not sure where exactly), but this seems a bit hit-and-miss if you are not familiar with the area - not something you want to have to worry about when you start off a hike.

Hi Intrepid,
Never left a car in the Busingata, but have done so 30 to 40 times in the Mnweni at homesteads. We just used to pitch up and ask at a well kept homestead for permission. It is good to ask an elder or at least a man first. They then become responsible for the car in return for something. We used to leave a large (20kg+) bag of maize meal or some such. We never had an issue and sometimes the car had even been washed while we were away!

It was always easy to arrange on arrival although looking back we used a wide range of homesteads because the state of the road would control how far along one could reach, homestead condition varied from year to year (we took that as a proxy for safety) and, of course, it depends who was at home when we pitched up. We also used to take photos of the homestead and bring them back to the people on the next visit (prob less of a desirable in the era of phone cameras).
