Transport in and around the Drakensberg

Does anyone have an email contact for a local taxi?

I plan on doing Sentinel car park to Cathedral peak hotel 5 day hike, and would really like some advice regarding parking, transport to sentinel car park and so on. How much do they charge to park? Also, where can I book transport to sentinel car park? Any help would be much appreciated.

Last year, we also planned to do this, but we finally didn't because the staff at Amphitheater Backbackers (www.amphibackpackers.co.za/) not recommended us to do it without a guide (mainly because of the high risk of bad weather in the area), and there were no guide available at the last minute, so we choked... (We did some day hikes instead...)

Here is what we were suppose to do :

Going : Take the Amphitheater Backpackers bus from their lodge to Sentinel Car park. They told us that we can take it if 1) they have a day trip at the Amphitheater that day, 2) there is still space in the bus.

Return : Take a shuttle with Golf got you (www.golfgotyou.com/) from Didima Camp to Winterton (Bazbus stop).

We didn't had a car, we used the Bazbus. There is a stop at Amphitheater backpackers for the beginning and a stop at Winterton (First National Bank) for the return.

Hello all,

I am heading to the Drakensberg with my girlfriend on November 1st for some hiking. I am hoping to achieve the following without use of a hire car:

1. Get from Jburg to Thendele camp in Royal Natal (Current plan: Get the Greyhound and get off in Harrismith; then either get public transport or hire a private taxi to get to Thendele)
2. Do a day walk in Royal Natal (The Gorge - where we can depart from Thendele on foot) -
3. That same evening, after the walk, get across to somewhere near the Cathedral peak hotel (Current plan: Private hire taxi)
4. Early next morning set off on the Camel trail to the Organ Pipes Pass.
5. Return down the Thuthumi route to wherever the road begins (where is that?)
6. Travel to somewhere nearby to sleep - any of the places near Didima would be ok. (Current plan: Private hire taxi)
7. Next day get to Estcourt to catch the Greyhound back to Jburg (Current plan: Private hire taxi)

My questions are:
Q1. Can i sign the Mountain Register somewhere near where I will start my Organ Pipes Pass Camel hike i.e. near Cathedral Peak Hotel? If not, could i sign it while i am in Royal Natal the day before?
Q2. Is there anything in the above plan that seems impractical, uneconomical or impossible?
Q3. Does anyone have the phone number of a taxi company who will ferry us around?
Q4. If anyone knows of any good places to stay in the Cathedral Peak Hotel area or the Didima area then I would be glad to hear of them. Looking for either campsites or low budget huts etc.
Q5. I understand there are public 'taxis' on certain routes around the Berg, but I can't find any information on which routes they run, or what times. Any ideas where i can find out?

I will be very grateful for any help you can provide. I have searched far and wide for info on transport but not got very much!

You may want to aim for the Amphitheatre Backpackers a few KMs from Royal Natal National Park, they are super organised try contacting them they hopefully will have advice about the other transport links you require.

Afternoon All!
I know there was a thread that covered transport in and around the Berg, but I was hoping for new updated info.
Does anyone know who, or how we can pay for transport between Didima camp(Cathedral Peak Hotel) and Injasuthi Camp?
We are three adult males and will be hiking from Didima down to Injasuthi in January 2016, need to leave the vehicle at either or and travel to the other?

Does anyone knows local transports in Drakenberg area (taxi, bus, minibus, and costs) ?
I want to know the means how to :
* start from Harrismith to arrive at Sentinel Car Park (via Phuthaditjhaba )
* leave Bushmans Nek and then be dropped nearby the N3 (Bruntville), in order to take a Greyhound for Durban.

I have just read in the Rough Guide (page 392)
Underberg Express (Tel 076 696 7108) operates a shuttle service between Durban Airport ... Himeville and Sani-Pass. The fare from Durban for the whole journey is R650 and the journey takes around 3h30 ...

May any one confirm the avaibility of this service, we are expecting to hike the GT during mid-october, and at which hour the shuttle may be and where at Underberg or Himeville driving back to Durban?

By the way a lot of Thanks for this good and very helpful site and forum. I am French, living in Spain and you can understand that it is not very easy to get accurate informations from here about your awesome Mountains.

I have concatenated "Southern-Africa_OSM_2015" vector map with "Drakensberg Hikes Version 3.00". This GPS map seems good for me to guide us through the mountain. Is it the best one ? If another hiker is interested in it I can try to create a Torrent link to allow its download and give it here.
