We are planning to hike the Escarpment Traverse later this month and need a ride from Cathedral Peak hotel to Sentinel car park, is there anyone that offers this service?

I recently had this bit of info passed on to me by another member, andrewbladon, who was part of a group in the same situation. They hired a local taxi which took them from Didima all the way back to Sentinel Car Park, for which they paid R1500.

I am still awaiting a reply from Cathedral Peak Hotel as to whether they offer such a service, or would consider doing it in future. You may want to phone them yourself.

Another possibility would be to contact one of the other resorts or lodges in the Northern Berg that cater for foreign tourists that don't have their own transport (like the backpackers) - they may have a minibus for situations like this, especially since their foreign guests do hikes that have transport challenges.

We recently got back from a fantastic hike from Cathedral Peak to Champagne Castle.

We overnighted at the Purple House in Winterton and as we needed a taxi to drop us at the start (9 hikers) and collect us on our descent, they put us in touch with Jack Shabalala (083 345 8791).

Jack did agreat job for us and proved to be very reliable (he was waiting for us on the Sunday morning at the hotel parking lot with a load of cold cokes and beers). So I am happy to recomend him if anyone else needs help on their logistics.

Regards
Rolf

Hey Rolf, thanks for passing on this useful info. Many hikers face the challenge of transportation on traverses which end in a different place, and this will come in handy.

Would anyone be able to follow-up with additional information? I have these same plans later this year, and I'm wondering how this has worked out for people.
Thanks!
Tim

Welcome Tim.

I've heard that the Cathedral Peak Hotel now offers a shuttle service, can't remember where I heard this, but compare with this thread:
www.vertical-endeavour.com/forum/8-drakensberg-hiking/1192-sentinel-car-park-to-cathedral-peak-hotel-walk.html
You could contact the hotel and ask: www.cathedralpeak.co.za/contactdetails.php
If you find out anything, please let us know.

If you are staying at a lodge the night before your hike, you should definitely ask them too.

I emailed Cathedral Peak Hotel and received the reply below. I haven't yet followed-up any further:

Unfortunately we do not offer transport from or to the hotel. We normally use a company called Golf Got You. They supply transport around this area and I would advise that they are the best people to speak to regarding your request. Their numbers are as follows: 036 488 7255 (land line) or call Fiona directly on 084 581 6492.

I hope that this has been a help to you.

Kind regards

A friend and I are planning to start the Grand Traverse in a couple of weeks from the Sentinel car park. We will arrive from Switzerland and then travel directly from the Johannesburg airport to the Drakensberg. At the end we will have to return immediately to the Johannesburg airport. I am trying to decide the most efficient and practical way of traveling to and from Jo'burg. For the start I figure that we can get to Harrismith by either bus or car, but does anyone know how much it would cost to take a taxi, or other service, from there to the Sentinel car park?

Thanks for your help.
