Bolts on Beacon Buttress gully

Beacon Buttress Gully seems to be littered with ugly rusting metal poles. I hear they are used for adventure racers to attach a rope to, allowing them to run down the gully without too much danger of taking a nasty fall. There was even a proper sport climbing bolt at one point.

Surely this isn't allowed? Its a real eyesore.

Some pics of them (there were more):

Yes I see questions are being raised about these...
The critical question for me is whether the right protocols were followed and if proper permission was sought where applicable. This I currently don't know about. There is a policy in place as it concerns bolting of climbing routes in certain cases, but I'm not sure if its applicable in this case. I'm prepared to live with it as long as it was done legally.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Those bolts have been around for years and as far as I know were installed for the Mont-aux-Sources challenge, an annual 50km trail run starting and finishing at Mahai Campsite, up the Chain Ladders and down Beacon Buttress Gully.

Perhaps it is naïve of me, but I would hope that a regular organized sporting event would have followed the necessary processes to get these installed?
