Cell phone signal in Drakensberg was created by redhead
Hi , I'm part of a GT resupply camping at the top of Bannermans pass in early May.
Does anyone know if there is a cell phone signal up there (vodacom or mtn) ?
And if so , is it on the edge or does it extend inland a bit. thanks.

I will also be part of a GT resupply trip for the Durban based Mountain Backpackers , from 30 Apr to 02 May. Also heading up Bannermans pass , camping above it, and hiking back down Langalibalele pass.
Last time I was there I had Vodacom reception on the edge, but not inland, and then got again at top of Langalibalele pass.

Hi kliktrak, thanks for the info. I'm on the same hike, coming from jhb. So you reckon there's signal but not where we set up tent. Do you know how many are booked to do it so far ?
Cheers.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

The Giants Castle escarpment is pretty good for Vodacom signal, especially on the peaks which have a clear view into the valleys. Even the contour path has good reception, and I remember making a call from Bannerman Hut before. If you can't get signal from the summit of Bannerman Pass (which might be because of the buttress blocking the view), you might have to walk along th edge towards Gypaetus Point until you find it.
Inland won't work, but where exactly are you planning on camping?

@redhead
Ok great, meet up with you in just over a week's time
I am not sure of exact numbers of the resupply party or the GT team itself - check with Greg the hike leader - details on the mountainbackpackers website on the fixture list page.
I am trying to recall if there was any signal at the camping site on top, i wouldnt think so. If its the same spot we camped last time, its far enough from the edge that signal doesnt reach from what I recall, but close enough to walk to the edge of the escarpment to get signal.
cheers
Richard

Hi!
Does anyone know which telephone company has the best phone signal in Central Berg: Vodacom, Cell C, MNT or any other?
Thanks in advance,
Myriam

HI myriam,
All depends on were you go. Examples, I have had signal on Telkom roaming with MTN all the way to Keith Bush Camp with a few dead spots along the way, Then you can get half down the road to Injesuthi and have absolutely no signal on any network at all. Escarpment edges you have better chances as well
Cheers

My input here may not be that current, as coverage networks do change over time. The weather and type of phone also plays a role. For Monk's Cowl and Giant's Castle I'd say Vodacom. For the Injasuthi escarpment my impression is that MTN is better than Vodacom. I would avoid Cell C and 8ta/Telkom because their coverage is still too weak across South African in general.
You can compare the coverage maps of the different providers for what its worth:

Hi,
Apologies if this is in the wrong spot or if info on this is already available on the site. I wanted to know if there are any reliable spots for cell comms on the grand traverse route. My wife and two friends are currently doing a S-N traverse and i am hoping i might coordinate some updates.
Thanks a mill

3 of us recently (almost 3 months ago already - where does the time go??) did a N-S GT on the speed route.
2 on Vodacom and 1 on Mtn if I recall correctly.
We generally had comms when we were close to the escarpment edge and had the best comms just after we crossed the Sani road heading into Lesotho (it was a Lesotho cell tower based on the info on my phone) and couldn't get data there but the voice signal was perfect.
Good luck. I know it is nice to hear from loved ones on their journeys
