Cathedral Peak Community Campsite (at Didima)

Hi Morgan. The Didima campsite has not been closed down, but it's run by the community, not Didima Camp, so they only open it during peak seasons / school holidays (latest update here ). You could probably still camp there, as the gate is not locked (or wasn't the last time I was there), but it's unlikely that there'll be water in the ablutions. Some alternative campsites have been suggested in the other thread. Enjoy Xeni Cave and respect the Berg.

Thanks, Grandeur. The situation with the campsite is frustrating.

pretty annoying, i started my last hike at MC rather than Didima, even though Didima would have made things much easier, just so i could have a warm shower and a camp site (if needed) at the end.

#how to fail at bringing tourists / business into you area.

Hi all,

Thank you very much for replying. I read there is a Campsite near Bergville... Going to try that rather then trying my luck at Didima.
It does suck however looking forward to the stillness of Xeni!

Keep well!
Much obliged!

I got an email from kznwildlife that Didima campsites are currently closed. We are also going to camp at Bergville this weekend.

Hi there,

I'm planning to do the Bell Traverse via the Orange Peel Gap - driving down from Jozi on the 18th December 2017. We were going to camp at the Cathedral Peak Community campsite so that we could head out very early on the morning of the 19th, but when I phoned KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife I was informed that the campsite is closed. I have booked Sherman's cave instead. Does anyone have any info on the closure of the campsite? Is there just the one in the area owned by Didima?

Also, does anyone have any recent info regarding the condition of the Bell Traverse route after all the snow and rain we've been having?

Thanks and Regards

Jenny

Hi Jenny

We also used to use the campsite at Cathedral on a regular basis, and I also tried to call to see if it was open now in December but I got the same response as you got.

There is another thread (below) which you could refer to.

We were on the traverse last in Feb 2017, so can't comment about recently but we had a great trip Feb, we were at Mahai this last weekend and it rained lots, so I'm assuming that you will find enough water on the traverse itself.

Hope all is well?

We've been wanting to take a few friends up to Xeni cave, however we would like to leave JHB the Friday afternoon and camp over somewhere in order to commencing our hike on Saturday morning.

My plan was to camp at Didima Camp the Friday evening, however I was told that it has been closed down?

Does anyone have other suggestions?

Thank you very much!
Morgan

Hi Morgan,

I realise I am way too late, but the last time I hiked in the Didima area we drove from Jhb and stayed here: www.amphibackpackers.com/

There are chalets, we just camped. Easy to get to, right next to the main road, cheap and effective with a bar should the need arise. Check it out.
