Hey All,
Not sure if this is the correct category, but anyway.
I am wondering if there are hiking routes that also offer potential fly fishing options? The idea is to hike in an area, do some exploring and fly fishing (catch and release) in the river/s and then overnight camp along the trail and continue exploring and fishing for a few days. I understand that there are Lodges in the regions that offer day hiking and fishing but the idea is to keep it wild and rugged
I would assume that the southern drakensberg would have the best options or potential for such, and that the activities will require permits and approvals, and may not even be allowed... But just reaching out to see if anyone has done this or if it's realistic.

You can do this at any of the KZN wildlife camps, only thing to keep in mind is the "no camping within 5km of reception" rule.
best are thus reserves with long stretches of river far from camp, ie elands hook river at lotheni or from Didima to Monks cowl etc. You can also hike up over the escarpment and fish the rivers in Lesotho. I have done all of these options and its great.

Hi Smithers_23, the Mhlwazini River is apparently good for fly fishing and offers good hiking with several caves to use and tenting options.
Do some googling for Peter Brigg, author of "Call Of The Stream", a book which features fly fishing in the Berg and Lesotho. You may clean some info from blog posts and articles he has written too. He was a friend of John Hone and is featured in a chapter on fly fishing in "Encounters With The Dragon".
