Hi All
I'm busy training for my first GT in May next year. While I aim to do as much hiking as possible before then, what training regimens would you recommend when hiking isn't an option? At the moment I'm doing 30 min cardio (stair mill) and 30 min leg strength training at gym 4 times a week. Any other suggestions would be welcome!

Welcome to the forum! If you search the forum you'll find various threads on training.
A random little exercise that I find helps a lot is standing on one leg with your eyes closed for a minute. Do it with a backpack if it becomes too easy. I find it helps with proprioception and strengthening your hips, which are aspects not easily addressed outside of hiking or trail running. Slacklining does the same.

Hi
I read your request for help with training for the GT. I am no specialist in this field but would recommend you do both stamina and strength training. Make sure you get used to the extra weight on your feet.
The reason for contacting you though, is because I am planning my second attempt at the GT end April beginning May 2019....... less days leave for those who are full time employees due to holidays on 27th April and 1st May. Not yet too cold and still relatively long daylight hours. Usually water is readily available on the Berg this time of year. Also less chance of thunderstorms. We started on 21st April this year and had perfect weather for the 7 days we were there.
My hiking partner from the first attemp in April 2018 developed inflammation in his ankle on day 6 and we had to quit. He will probably not be able to join me this year due to health issues in his family. I am thus looking for someone, or a small group to join for the GT. I am self employed and can do it any time I wish.
Hope to hear from you.
