Basutho Kraal waypoints

Hi,

Does anyone have pinpoints for the kraals in the berg ? I saw one post a while ago with a few on, but can't seem to find it again ...

I have played around in Google Earth quick and have marked several Kraals, would anyone be interested in verifying this and I can then upload the KMZ ?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Kragbees

It might have been my info. I visually scoped and logged a couple of kraals above cockade pass on GE. I have not done this for other areas, it is too time consuming, i only did it because i was going to hike up the pass.

Hi ST,

Yes I'm sure it was your info, I've now marked approx. 14 kraals, and can make it available for anyone via .GPX on request. I will continue to "browse" the berg and mark more when I have time.

How does one upload to the site, should intrepid do this ?

Also, very impressed with your new book, congrats ! What do you shoot with ? Canon/Nikon ?

Hi Kragbees

The only way i am familiar with is just to email the kmz files from google earth that you have mapped and saved to interested parties.

Thanx for compliments. The book was all shot on nikon film and digital gear, however most of the big landscape images in the book were shot on a pentax 67ii which is a medium format film camera 6x7cm worth of film real estate. Still better than digital in my opinion.

Nice ... so I take it there's no HDR images in the book ? Because it's some serious nice colours coming out ... just wondering.

I've got a Nikon D7000 with a couple of lenses, nothing professional.

No hdr, which i find a bit over the top, it just does not look real. The saturation and contrast i will play around with a bit, but if you get good light on the subject it usually pops pretty much on its own without user intervention.

@ Kragbees

Check out the VE Composed map thread. Although it is still being an infant at this stage it will surely grow into a monster.

The Basothu kraal locations would be an awesome addition to the numerous other points of interest.

I normally mark them too by GPS when I come across them. I find there are 2-3 "sub-categories", for lack of a better word, those with a hut, those without a hut (but still frequently used, typically in the rock bands, with the band forming one of the walls), and then smaller stone-wall enclosures which are less frequently used. The degree of use, and the chances of finding someone at home, are highest for those with huts of course.

@Kragbees, there are several options for dealing with this. You can upload files to the Downloads section (click on "Upload a Download" in your user menu), and the download file will then be linked to your profile. If you go this route, it would be preferable to store it in GPX format since it can then be viewed in a variety of applications, Google Earth/Maps included, and it makes it easier for folks to load it onto GPSes. There is a KML to GPX tool around somewhere. The other thing is that it would be helpful to be able to differentiate between waypoints that have been properly measured on the ground by GPS and those marked using Google Earth/Maps. Those found using Google could simply have a "Google" word in the comments field of the relevant waypoint.

If you have a Google account, then send me the email address associated with it via PM. I will then give you access to add and edit the Google Map I created recently. You can add these here too if you want.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.
