Good day,
I am planning on taking my family with young kids on an overnight hike to Gxalingenwa Cave from Cobham in April. This will be our first time hiking in the Berg.
Is there any kind of security concerns or recent security related incidents in that area or cave to be aware of?
Also does anybody advise if the hike will be doable for an 8 year old? I know the distance is 14.5ks but thats about all i know of the route.
Thanks much appreciated.

Hi Lance
Security wise, no issues here. Smugglers do sometimes use the valley but would pass along the path well below the cave, and they are generally of no concern anyway
It would obviously depend on the 8 year old (and others) fitness, but its not an extremely tough hike, it does have a fair amount of uphill though, so start early. The normal route to hike in would be via Emerald stream and Pinnacle rock
You can also opt to return via the Giants Cup trail, which has some nice swimming spots. Distance is about the same.
Make sure you have some form of GPS or map, the only trail markings are right near the start

Another option, as I assume u r starting from Cobham, would be to be dropped off at the start of the Giants Cup trail which is on the Sani pass rd. It is 10,4km with the first 4,7km being mostly contouring. Might be an option with the youngster.
