If anyone sees a guy in the Berg with torn pink trousers....that's Intrepid!!
I also now know why you started the topic "Snakes not in hibernation"...has it got something to do with the sneaking zipper?
Is it possible to buy to one pair of trousers that are both fit for general hiking but also waterproof? I've had a look at waterproof pants and all seem to be to heavy and hot for general hiking.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Actually those pants are grey. The pink you see are my underpants visible through the tears.
An old hiking buddy of mine had a system where he would whip a pair of Gortex pants on and off, over his shorts, depending on the temperature. But Gortex will only keep you cool to an extent. The waterproof pants generally available here will all cause you to overheat I think.

As long as I'm not behind you on the chain ladders, go for it!
I think you should make a list of you oldest gear and post some pics for us. Your silicone fixed boots I must see but sound like you have some well worn in trousers and other stuff as well. I like it! I know in the old army days a guys bleached browns (uniform) was his pride, oumanne (old men) they were called.

Been thinking of getting shorts and making waterproof legs that zip on when required. From the knee down is usually the area that gets wet or legs scratched. I have not looked into this yet. Should be quiet feasible.
I also use longs while hiking.

I assume you mean Cape Onion Mart, rather that CUM wich is a Christian Bookshop (strange acronym though
)
Cape Storm Technical pants. With a zip from bottom of trousers to knee high. Breathable. Reinforced. Last a Looooong time....
They can survive small nuclear explosions. Ouhout thickets, which are about equivalent to the former, and they dry off in a flurry.
Just one hint though. After four days or so, if they don't dry off ON you, they are almost impossible to crack your way back into.

Seriously. Bullet-proof pants
For waterproof (if such a concept truly exists) Cape Storm waterproof outers, with baffled zip. Weight about the same as an anorexic sparrow, and they work (..ish)

The CUM bookshops in PMB have closed down, they have been replaced by CBD and some privately owned one... I.e. yes I do mean Cape Union...
Just got the First Ascent hiking pants, oddly CUM doesn't stock these. Nick - the owner of Bush and Bundu in PMB (who swears by Capestorm pants, which also cost more than the First Ascent ones) - told me the FA ones are lighter and have the same specs as the Capestorm ones, so I went with his advice... I'll post some feedback when I have taken them on a hike (now that the Bokke are (unfortunately) out of the RWC, most people's excuse for not joining me on hikes has been removed)...

Seem like so far I'm the only one on this thread that hikes in short pants, but after lots of year hiking i've recently found the solution to the problem of getting scratches everywhere: old school sport socks
yup, works like a charm, you know those rugby or hockey socks that come up to right under your knees and then has a handy rope so you can bind it around your leg, it works brilliantly. Especially since most scratches I've found occurs below you knees.
And the best part is, it's cheap.

I am also one of the few that hike in short winter and summer, can not get over the feeling of having my legs covered when walking, but I do wear long gaters when needed to offer some protection.

I'm all for long pants. Need to keep my legs skirt happy after the hikes. Wow, I almost forgot I got a new pair in Canada. I'm excited to sport them on our next hike in a few weeks. My current hiking pants have buttons on the inner waistband that chafe horribly when a pack rubs against them. Another important matter...if you wear longs, make sure they are not dragging. When wet they will really trip you up. Literally.
