Well done George for fixing your jetboil problem. I know where to go now if I have a similar issue!

At the expense of reviving this old topic and getting flak for it (as this is also my 1st post...)
I am very intrigued by this defect on your Jetboil burner mechanism Geordie.
I bought myself the Jetboil Zip a few days ago after watching extensive youtube reviews and write ups on various stove types and brands.
Can you confirm in any way if this issue is isolated to you? Or is it part of a broader problem?
I was also under the impression that jetboil stoves can use any compatible gas canister across various brands?

As can be seen from these pics in Geordie's earlier post, this problem would apply to all new jetboil stoves with the solid pin; I don't know if that applies only to the jetboil flash or also to other models. Since the original post is quite old, it is possible that jetboil have since revised their design to overcome the inherent fault. Take a look at your stove through a magnifying glass: if it looks like the second pic then you could have a problem with some canisters. But if the bottom edge of the pin is at an angle, or has a groove, hole or slot in it to let the gas past, then it should be ok on any EN417 canister. Still worth testing all canisters before your hike though just to be sure.
Hope this helps

Thank you for the reply Andrew, I have done the comparison and it seems my burner is the same as his original. Seems I have some testing to do, just glad I saw this potential issue prior to a hike.

The plot thickens.
As previously mentioned, I have the JetBoil Zip.
After extensive testing, same issue.
The thing does not work in factory state on any other canister than the native Jetboil Jetpower fuel canister.
I have "fixed" the issue by buying their own brand, but it is hardly done with a smile.
Geordie's hack will have to be repeated on my Zip for it to work on all types of canisters.
I am fairly miffed about all of this.

It would be interesting to compare a 'other brand' canister with a JetBoil canister to see how they have overcome the inherent design fault limitation, because it appears to me that with the flat (perpendicular) base to the inlet probe and no side apertures/openings to provide an alternative route for the released gas, there is just as much chance of a JetBoil canister not working if the canister valve plate is not designed in a way that it is tilted somehow when it is pushed open by the inlet probe as the canister is screwed onto the stove...
