JetBoil users beware

Do Jetboil claim this??I would love to see this on paper, it would strengthen my case.

Consumer Protection Act Section 24 may cover this (you can download the act at www.info.gov.za/view/DownloadFileAction?id=99961)
Section 24(2):
(2) A person must not—
(a) knowingly apply to any goods a trade description that is likely to mislead the
consumer as to any matter implied or expressed in that trade description;
I haven't had a proper look at the question or this section of the Act, but that may point you in the right direction...
I'll catch up with what is going on on this thread when work calms down a bit

Sabine, it’s a Jetboil Jetboil. Sorry I couldn’t resist that!! It’s the Flash, new one with the fancy colours which change when hot and the fold away valve which you forget until after you screw your canister in.
Good news to both of you, all of you in fact is that Drifters are working on it and taking it seriously. The "You have to use Jetboil gas only" came from Jetboil, not from Drifters. Today the chap in the shop screwed my stove into a randomly selected canister and it did NOT flow, he then screwed the shops demo stove (Same as mine) into the same canister and it flowed freely, so we certainly have progress.
I am also in the selling game and I am well aware of warranty conditions and if I get a return, I also look very carefully at the condition under which the component failed, especially if I did not supply the auxiliaries or ancillaries.
So, not using Jetboil gas, I was not expecting this claim to be easy, but I am sure that I am on solid ground, so we will just work away at it.
Please be assured that this is not a fight or argument and it’s all being handled civilly.
I was irked by Jetboil internationals initial response to a message from myself, which was a “standard issue “reply and indicated that they had clearly not read my message.

The Jetboil agents, RAM, I presume, sent a new “valve block" to be fitted ay Drifters and this arrived and was fitted and it still does not allow the gas to flow on some of my, admittedly non Jetboil, canisters. BUT the same canister worked on all the other stoves on display in the shop, except their Jetboil. SO now we have two new Jetboil "flash" stoves which do not work on all canisters even though they have the EN147 marking.
So I cut my losses and brought the stove home with me, R1200?? plus worth of stove under warranty and I have to check it with all cylinders before I can go out hiking???? Not acceptable
SO, I went home and got off my phat behind, got my fine tools and magnifying glass out and got to work. Guess what, This model of Jetboil has a design fault. THIS MODEL OF JETBOIL HAS A DESIGN FAULT. I'll say it again and they can try and sue me if they want to.
The little pin which opens the valve in the canister when screwed in is at fault here. In the old models this is a solid pin, and the inrushing gas flows past the pin and on up to the stove’s valve and burner. In the NEW Jetboil Flashes, this pin is hollow, and this hollow passage is the gas flow path. It seems that on some gas canisters, their valve system meets this pin head on and although it "burps" the canister and releases the gas, the gas cannot flow up the hollow pin because it's well and truly blocked off. How it works at all still beats me, perhaps the gas canister valves are supposed to sit slightly skew, and the occasional flat one will block the gas flow.
So, what do the other manufactures do: Well they either have a solid pin OR a hollow pin with a groove cut into it across the gas passage, so that the gas can still flow if the pin makes flat contact with the canister valve. Some have additional holes drilled across the diameter of the hollow pin.
The fix: I removed the O-ring so as not to damage it and got to work with my needle files and filed a nice little groove in the pin. Put the O-ring back and hey presto, it works on all canisters.
Please only do this if you are very handy and sure of yourself working with fine tools. Remove the valve and the jet and the O-ring first and get rid of all filings before reassembly. Drop me a PM if you need to. I’ll attach some pics later if my macro setting can pick up the new groove.
I am not going to retract my warning, especially in the light of the fact that a second Jetboil stove (randomly taken off the shelf at Drifters) had the same problem with the same canister. SO, if you own a Jetboil which has a hollow pin to pierce the gas canisters, then check ALL your canisters before venturing into the deep beyond, some of them may not work and you don’t want to find this out in the cold at 3000m.
Once again, no problem with Drifters or RAM, they did all they could, as far as I am aware, and my patronage of their shop is not at all in jeopardy. Jetboil may want to take issue with me on a few points but they shot their bolt with me when they got their tea boy to send me the “Standard issue reply” when I first went to them, in spite of a well worded letter explaining the situation.
Anyway enough gassing , I have a long weekend to plan with a stove which is working even better and safer than the day I brought it.
George.

Well done for figuring it out. My JetBoil is very much the old type and so works fine with other cartridges. I really think they should keep things standard and keep it working with the other makes of cartridges.
Ja Chris I hear you. I am sure that 90 % of canisters will work with their "New" design, and now I am going to use the B word... BUT...!!!??? (Add your own thoughts and feelings here).
The older one's also had their problems, I would be surprised if you are still on the original igniter?? The diffuser also gets hard and brittle, but that after a lot of use. The new diffuser looks very simple and seems to work, so let’s give it the test of time shall we. All said, Jetboil covers all my berg tea and cooking needs and I have yet to see anything on the shelves that I would want to replace it with. Also, the new needle valve has " user replaceable" O-rings on it and the jet has a mesh filter in front of it to stop crud before blocking itself up, so, as always, good things to be said as well.
Hey, anyone got access to thin Titanium plate and drill bits to suite? I would love to try and make a new type diffuser for the old type stove, and get old faithful up and running again.

I generally have a very poor opinion of these kinds of lighters, particularly theirs, and stopped using it on the JetBoil after a few times of use already. I use a regular cigarette lighter. The other thing which is a joke is the wind-resistance. I keep an extra aluminium strip handy as a wind-shield. It is tucked under their insulative sleeve and covers half of the pot circumference. The other annoyance is that the lid doesn't fit tightly anymore and easily falls off. My JetBoil is about 6 years old I think and heavily used. It hasn't needed any maintenance yet. Still use it actively and its great for efficiency.Geordie wrote: The older one's also had their problems, I would be surprised if you are still on the original igniter??
