wikiloc africa map looks good, seems to have lots of trails and even some unexpected things marked like chichi bush camp, only annoying thing is there does not seem to be anyway to import GPX tracks (that i could find on android anyway).

Another one, this is Organ Pipes, check all the caves are there as well. And you have the option to view as Contour Map, Satellite and Hybrid. Ill be checking there accuracy next week in the Berg.

ok, figured out how to load GPX/KML ... just try open the file in File Manager, and it asks you if you would like to open with WikiLoc ... after which it appears to be imported

Based on what I read here I downloaded Wikiloc on Android and played with it yesterday. Really good app and I will certainly use this a lot in future. Thank you to those that pointed it out.

Any battery testing specific to wikiloc done?
Would like to find out what the battery "damage" would be over sustained use of an hour or more.

It definitely took a chunk out the battery of about 25% in 2 hours on a Samsung S5.
But that included taking a few pics. I will definitely do more specific testing.

I am looking at utilising Wikiloc on a hike up Giant's Castle at the end of Jan. Will give feedback on all the above thereafter.

Link to Wikiloc YouTube channel. It explains the concept better than I can.

Hi all

The JHB section of the MCSA now have a new and shiny clubhouse at CityRock and are trying to put together a number of talks and slideshows that will hopefully be of interest to the outdoor community in Gauteng.

One of the topics we would like to discuss is GPS units. Most likely as a series of talks/interactive sessions that will cover topics such as which GPS should you buy for what purpose through to a few handy tips to using said device.

I personally have no experience of using a cell phone based GPS tool in the hills and it appears knowledge is a bit thin on the ground for the club as a whole. Is there anyone out there who lives in Gauteng or who will likely pass through it one day who can and is willing to talk about cell phone based GPS apps etc

Thanks
Andrew
