Hi Guys,
Do anyone have a nice 4 day route suggestion, we would preferably like to over night in the caves and keep to the lower areas of the berg. Three of the people joining on the hike will be completely new to the Berg. We would be hiking over Easter Weekend from the 30th Of March - 2nd Of April.
My friends and I already hiked the route from Injisuthi Camp, Centenary Hut, Judges Pass, Upper Injisuthi Cave, Mafadi Peak, Leslie's Pass, Marble Baths Camp site, over Easter last year.
Your assistance is appreciated.
Kind Regards
Marley

@MarleyB,
4 days in the lower berg is quite a long time, but you can try Zulu cave to Wondervalley cave from Moncs Cowl area, basically a 3 day hike.
You can also do a lot of the lower berg caves in the Injasuthi area, like LIC, Marble Baths caves, grindstone cave and Wonder Valley cave, although these would already be booked probably.
Why not go to the top of the escarpment? Take 2 days to get to the top, so the newbies will survive the trek. Mnweni area is good for this. 5 star cave night one, ledges cave night 2, Easter cave night 3 and then down Ntonjelana pass on day 4.
Or you can even go up the chain ladders and go from Ifidi cave right around the Mnweni cutback and back. Just depends on the fitness levels of your group.
Enjoy!

Hi @viking
What route would you suggest for the cave hopping? I am not familiar with the area.

Hey all!
Admin please move if this isn't the right spot.
Background: I've moved to SA and super keen to hike the Drakensberg as much as possible. Currently a bit overwhelmed with how much there is on offer!
I was wondering if anyone could suggest a route, and maybe a guide who would be able to show me the way? Was thinking something along the lines of 4 - 10 days of 20 - 40km/day, depending on terrain etc of course. More than happy to scramble, and looking for epic views. I'll be driving myself over from near Mozambique size of KZN, so I guess a circuitous route, or somewhere where I could leave my bakkie for the duration of the hike, would also be useful. Also flexible on when I go; I haven't booked annual leave yet.
Thanks : )

Hi pandaling,
Welcome to South Africa and VE!
Firstly I'd recommend having a good read through this forum and specifically any of the threads under the "common topics" heading at the bottom left of the page - any of those loops are great, especially if you were to only visit the 'berg once. This forum is probably the best single source of Drakensberg information available anywhere.
Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (EKZNW) is the management authority for most of the Drakensberg in KZN and it is safe to leave your vehicle at any of their entry points.
Guides that I can recommend are Peak High Mountaineering peakhigh.co.za/ or High Horizons highhorizons.co.za/
Alternatively, if you are going to be around for a while, you could join some VE members on their hikes or check out the KZN section of the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) - they have loads of organised hikes and climbs in the Drakensberg. They are on Facebook and also have a whatsapp group and mailing list.
Hope this helps.

Hello, fellow adventurers!
I am looking for suggestions of your favourite overnight cave hikes in the Drakensberg (2 days). I am organising a group of roughly 8 people, some of whom will be "caving" for the first time. Fitness level is moderate. We'd ideally like a 2 day hike that we can do in a weekend.
I have done Gxalingenwa, Tarn, Lakes, Zulu and Xeni Caves (each one of those a couple of times).
Does anyone have other, similar caves for us to try out?
Thanks so much!

I'd recommend Marble baths cave, but it has to be booked in advance. Regards, Nicolaas
