Those are some nice zig-zags! The Bushman's Neck area lends itself particularly well for that, though my own version is less impressive.

Had a particularly interesting 4 days at Giant's Castle once in mid-winter involving Giants Pass, Bannerman Pass and Judges Pass. It was improvised because we got so badly battered by a particularly vicious wind at Makhaza: tents got damaged, equipment was blown away, had to yell into each other's ears, and simply could'nt function properly. Four people, who thought they had seen it all, quickly retreated back down Giants Pass and traversed across to Bannerman Hut to do the other 2 passes.

You would have thought that we should have known better after the warning lecture we got at the reception before we headed out, in addition to the big branches we had to drag off the road on the way in! The following 2 nights in Bannerman Hut were very snug though.

I'm going back for some more zig-zags in the Giants area, but since it involves undocumented passes that I'm not even sure about, better to wait till I've done it before writing about it.

The Didima and Yodler's Cascades area is a quiet little treasure that not many get to. It can be accessed from Monk's Cowl via Gray's Pass or from Cathedral Peal via Organ Pipes, Thuthumi or Tlanyaku Passes. It is possible to do a 4 day loop through the area, as I'm about to do this week, involving Thuthumi and Tlanyaku Passes and Didima Cave. The best is to have 5 days which will give time to enjoy seldom seen views, some of SA's highest peaks and several swims in the pools in the Cascades.

So, not to mention the Bell Traverse and Northern Berg mini-traverse classics, my nomination would be a 4-5 day loop through the Didima area.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

Yes, I can't tell you how inviting those pools behind Windsor Castle and in the Yodelers Cascades valley were on our recent record traverse. Would be great to go there with a few days to explore the area - Thlanyaku is also the only non-rock pass I haven't been up between the Chain Ladders and Giant's Castle Pass - just never got round to it I suppose

And Didima Cave is worth seeing, it compares with Injasuthi Summit Cave in several ways. The escarpment edge around Didima Buttress and Witch Peak is amazing.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

My 2 fav.s are :
Fangs to Rockeries :
D1 : 5 Star cave
D2 : Fangs cave
D3 : Pins cave
D4 : Mponjwane cave
D5 : MCC

Days on Escarp are short but plenty time to walk along the edge and admire the views, take pics, climb peaks.

and
Cobham :
D1 : Spectacle cave
D2 : explore valley opposite, check out Pholela, Lakes, Venice caves. Enjoy the Lakes District views. Overnight in Chameleon cave
D3 : Meet the army at Wilson’s cave, up Stones Pass (S) to Sandleni cave after sitting out a storm on Sandleni Buttress, a beautiful rainbow as the storm moves onto the lower Berg.
D4 : Across the Escarp and down Masubasuba Pass, meet a Rinkals along the way to Gxalingwena Cave
D5 : To Cobham offices

In hindsight, Pholela cave would be a better option end Day1. Also too much Basutho activity prevented me from climbing Hodgson’s Peak South.

First of all, let me say thanks to the great people who run this website. It really is a great resource and frequently inspires me to want to just drop everything and head up into the Berg.:)

A group of my friends and I have been toying with the idea of heading up to Didima Cave. I have no experience in this area, so would appreciate any advice anyone could give on whether it would be feasible to hike in from the EKZNW Monk's Cowl camp up Grays Pass to Didima Cave and back again in 4 days. Can you recommend any alternative route options that would allow us to complete a loop? Thanks.

The circular route I'd recommend is to descend Thlanyaku Pass and head back to Monk's Cowl via the contour path. But doing this route (or even the out and back route) in 4 days would be more of an endurance slog than an enjoyable hike.

For the out-and-back I'd recommend minimum 5 days:
1) to Keith Bush Camp
2) up Grays
3) Traverse to Didima Cave
4) Traverse back
5) Down gray's and back to camp

but the repetition is kinda boring so why not take 6 days and do the following:

4) Across escarpment and Down Thlanyaku to camp at the bottom of Thuthumi Pass (maybe not the safest place due to smuggling activity - any other suggestions?)

5) Hike along the contour path to Gatberg North/South camp

6) Hike out back to Monk's Cowl

Stijn - thanks for the advice. We will leave Didima Cave for another time when we have a few more days in hand.

Could you recommend any other good hikes to the top of the escarpment that could be completed in 4 days, other than those in the Cathedral Area? My impression is that both Mnweni and Injasuthi would require more than 4 days, unless you just want a hard slog.

Of course, I am always happy to go back to the Cathedral Area, but it would be nice to explore some new routes if there are any feasible ones for a group with reasonable fitness.

Firstly let me say if you are new to overnighting in the Berg, learn to read a map. And carry a GPS. Its invaluable when mist comes in. Also to help you find caves, etc.

Here’s options for a Monk’s Cowl hike but excl. Didima cave :

Day 1 : Hike up via the Sphinx to Blind Mans corner. Breakfast Stream is a great lunch stop. If the party is tired and want to call it a day, there’s a good campsite a few hundred metres to the left. Else head right and up the valley to Keith Bush campsite.
Day 2 : Hide your packs in the bushes (make sure it cant be viewed from above) and hike Up Greys Pass (it’s a clear path right from the Campsite). Be careful, further up there’s a spot where hikers have known to be confused with the path. Greys is an excellent introductory Pass cos it gives you a good feel of height as you climb opposite Cathkin Peak and alongside Intunja.
Hike a bit across the Escarpment enjoy the views to Vulture’s Retreat and across the Cathedral Range.
Head back down to Campsite.
Day 3 : Hike to Zulu cave and those who have the energy can climb Intunja, or head off to Stable cave.
Day 4 : Back to camp

This will be a good hike cos you get to go to the Escarpment without having to slog with a bag, you get to sleep in a tent and in a cave and there’s options for the energetic and the not so energetic.

Balarka - Mnweni is perfect if you have just 4 days. You don't get to do much escarpment traversing but the passes and caves make it all worth it.

Try up Mnweni Pass & down Rockeries, sleeping in Ledger's Cave or Mponjwane on top - it's a perfect intro to the area and can even be done in 3 days quite comfortably.

If you're a little more adventurous and don't mind tackling a pass without a path, up Fangs down Rockeries would be a great hike too.

And then there's the best 4 day hike I've done in the area: up Manxome, down Rockeries but that may have been the 4am sunrise over a blanket of clouds from Mpojwane Cave that's adding bias here :P
