- An important point. That has been my experience too.

When the weather forecast (+24 hours) for the Berg in late spring and winter points to stable high pressure conditions, it is pretty much bomb-proof. Those are the conditions under which I would advise someone to try this mode for the first time. It doesn't work in summer or the shoulder seasons of summer - even if the forecast is fine (too much dew, mist and unforecast thunderstorms).

It unlocks huge flexibility - even more than can be derived from a small tent.

I first got the idea from reading Barrier of Spears and also get the impression that there was more 'sleeping out' then than now. Also the generation that did military service were/are probably more accustomed to it.
