Camping near cathedral peak was created by Exploremp02
I'm planning on driving down to Cathedral on Saturday afternoon and running up on Sunday. Does anyone know of campsites close by?

Thanks Smurfatefrog. Decided to start on Saturday afternoon and camp at the plateau a few km in and then hit the summit for sunrise

Adding to an old query-
The Cathedral Peak campsite is still properly shut but I did come across this place:
www.cathedralpeakbackpackers.co.za
It isn’t a campsite. It is a self catering place with bunk beds and several rooms.
I didn’t know about it previously.
The place is next to the helipad at Cathedral Peak hotel. The helipad is above the hotel.

I see its right by the soccer field one crosses above the hotel. A shame there's no camping, it could have been useful. The rooms are more expensive than the Didima chalets, though. I guess if one is heading to the northern half of the reserve, it is more convenient than Didima.
The Didima campsite closed back in late 2015, so it has almost been 9 years now. A real shame, it was always one of my favourites.

Are you sure about Didima being cheaper, Ghaz?

I think there's a minimum charge if its one person and one night, but here's the prices for one person for two nights at Didima, I gave it Friday 23 Aug as check in and Sunday 25 Aug as check out. It spits out the same numbers if I change it to one night and two people.

A group of 6 of us stayed at the backpackers on Friday and Saturday night, on Saturday there were three groups in total, so 13 people in total at the backpackers that night.
On a different weekend with more or less people booking it may be different, luckily our group had 2 people per room with a pvt bathroom for each room, the kitchen is we equipped with 2 fridge/freezers, there is a braai area, TV, wifi etc (the dorm room has 4 beds, there are 3 of these, then there are 2 rooms that have a double bed each with a single bunk above)
We will use the backpackers again, it has opened up another option in the Cathedral area (since the camp site closed we have not been to the cathedral area as much), and it is obviously a personal preference but we will use the backpackers over Didima.
