Amphitheater Safety

Hi All
I’m keen to take the family on a multi night hike up to the top of the Amphitheater. I’ve done it many times before but not in the last five years. Can anyone give me an update on security at the top. I was thinking about going up the gully and tenting around Beacon Buttress where we won’t be too visible.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I also heard a rumour about the hut on the top being refurbished. Any news on that too please.

I’ve done this hike several times over the past few years and haven’t come across any safety issues or heard of any incidents. There’s usually a tour group camping overnight near the falls. Personally, I agree with Serious Tribe’s suggestion to head to the next stream and camp there—it’s off the main trail and the views are incredible. The hut isn’t worth using; it’s in very poor condition with half the roof missing. I’d strongly recommend avoiding it. Also, be cautious about the gully. With all the recent rain, it’s extremely slippery and can be dangerous, especially if the group isn’t experienced with this kind of terrain.

Hi MB. I cant speak on security, as I was last there in 2023.  However as another option, the next river about 1km south is the Bilanjil.  I have camped there many times, and never seen another person.  There is a small rock mound with some walls that will fit two tents, but flat space for a few others.  The Bilanjil is also right there.  The views north toward Sentinel and Tugela falls are amazing, as are the views over the escarpment and south.  You can see the falls in these pics as it was winter, but it must be pretty good now.

I can support this recommendation also. I've done the same thing numerous times and it's a beautiful spot with more shelter than Tugela side. I've also only seen crows that side and heard Jackals a couple of times too...
