Current State at Mnweni

HI
I see that it has been raining quite a lot at the drakensberg the past few days. Is it still safe to go to and hike the mNweni circuit? or will the rivers be a problem?

Just a general guideline based on my personal experience - typically the day after good rains the rivers would be pumping, but thereafter the water levels tend to drop and crossings are easier. Not always the case, but generally speaking this is the case. As ASL mentioned, good shoes really help with water crossings if the water flows strong. I also find hiking poles really help with balance. lastly, try and find a wider spot in the river to cross over, typically narrower sections would force the water throgh faster and deeper, while wider spots have shallower and calmer water.

Thanks Riaan. Yes we have good shoes, and will definitely get proper ropes for this hike. This is just our first time going to Mnweni and we just want to be cautious with the rain season. Any other specific tips you have for the Mnweni circuit? I would appreciate it so that I can be prepared

The Mnweni river is the one you need to look out for. Best is to phone Colleen at the Cultural Centre before and ask her what the state of the river is. The Mnweni River can flow quite strongly this time of year
