Steep snow gullies

Hi Guys! Wow, been a while, but it looks like I am in the berg again this weekend.

I was wondering (Coming from JHB) where one might find some snow firstly and secondy a moderate to easy snow gully to climb? I haveropes, harnesses, snow flukes etc, just no axes or crampons.... ($$$)

Plan is to leave miday on Friday and hike into the night, then return around 6pm on Sunday in JHB.

Thanks

Frosty

Its a hang of a drive from Jo'burg, but anywhere on the south side of Rhino Peak at Garden Castle or anywhere in the Bollard Pass gully.

Champagne Castle South Gully will also likely be full of the white stuff. Might be a bit technical without axes & crampons though?

Champage South gully has been on my "to do" list for ages! Any ideas on sourcing the said equipment? About 2k?

Unfortunately your gear needs are the wrong way round Frosty :cheer: . You start off with walking axe and crampons, since you can do a fairly steep gradient with just these, before it becomes necessary to rope up and place protection. If you are a member of the Joburg Section of the Mountain Club, they have some ice gear that you could use.

According to Raubenheimer's ice reports the snow gullies of the Central and Southern Berg were not so great. But the recent snowfall changed that and I know some ice climbers ascended the Eastern Gully on Giants Castle recently in what seemed to be good alpine conditions. I dont think you can do it without crampons and axe though. I've heard that the gullies coming off the Devils Knuckles at Bushman's Neck make for very fun snow gullies if the conditions are right. These would be easier than Eastern Gully and Champagne Castle South Gully.

Enjoy.

Take nothing but litter, leave nothing but a cleaner Drakensberg.

True Intrepid!

But most of my time is spent trad climbing so...

Let me see if I can source some gear!

Anyone out there ever made snow flukes/ pickets?
Thanks for the advice, looking for something easyish.. although if I get the required gear I may have a go at Champagne South Gully.
