Mlambonja Pass - Organ Pipes Pass link-up & escarpment traverse

You'll get water for Easter Cave down the slope from the cave in the long river that runs somewhat parallel to the escarpment there. I think the effort of getting to Easter Cave versus the effort of getting to Twins, dropping bags and fetching water from Lesotho if there is none locally is similar.

We did the hike from Cathedral Peak Hotel-Organ pipes-along escarpment-back to hotel via Mlambonja last weekend.Due to logistics we went along the contour road past the camel turn to Organ pipes. We found the path to be quite overgrown between the Camel turnoff and eNdumeni river. Most people taking the Camel road to top or Mike's pass to Organ pipes I guess. We woke up in the middle of Friday night with the sound of thunder , rain and lightning. Due to a late start, a very good brunch just below the top of Cleft peak and some wind and sleet/small hail along the top we decided to camp in the valley below Cockade/Elephant. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as we had some magical scenery from the Cockade/Elephant and Xeni areas on Sunday. I was worried about the water situation before the trip, but with the recent rains and snow there was water everywhere. I envy the guys that stay closer to the moubtain.

Looks like near the top of Cockade Pass to me. Cockade Peak on the right and The Elephant on the left. Don't have co-ordinates right now, but I'm sure somebody will be able to assist.

Feels like the Berg photo quiz! :P

I also thought Cockade Pass right away. For the GPS co-ordinate, go to the downloads section, download the Cockade Pass GPS track and you'll find it there.

Its at the bottom of the Elephant shortcut. Probably not shown on the current maps. Coordinates are: lat -28.98265 lon 29.13325 (wgs84) approximately. Cockade Pass travels diagonally from the middle right (in black area) to the centre bottom, well below.

Hi All!

I am planning a trip to Cathedral Peak over Easter weekend. Some advice will be appreciated on the route i am planning.

Intrepid...i am sorry if this info is somewhere else on the forum...you can delete this after replies

Ok, so some suggestions and comments are welcome. The yellow highlighted areas are where i am planning to find a camping spot.

Day 1: Cathedral Peak Hotel to just beneath Cathedral Peak via Orange Peal Gap. I have found a thread where i requested this info. :)

Day 2: Cathedral Peak to the top of Mlanbonja Pass via Bell Traverse. Here i need assistance on camping spots for night two. Where along Mlanbonja is a lekker camping spot?

Day 3: Top of Mlanbonja traversing to top of Organs Pipes Pass. Where at the top of Organ's Pipes Pass is a lekker spot? Guessing i should avoid the Windy gap?

Day 4: An early start down Organ's Pipes Pass and to car park because we have a looong drive back to Pta.

Any advice about the route to take above on the escarpment is also welcome. Any obstacles that i can expect?

Thanks!

Cleft Peak is a fairly substantial obstacle!

Why not use Roland's Cave for your 3rd night? Fantastic accommodation with the best view ever. If you'd rather tent, then try find a flat spot in the slight valley between Castle Buttress and Cleft Peak, before going around the corner to Windy Gap.

The river running directly behind Mlambonja pass offers plenty good camping areas, just drop down to the river and follow it upstream until you find a spot to your liking.

As for the escarpment, the main decision you'll have is to either go via Elephant gully or go around Mahout, the views in the gully are well worth it.
This thread will give you some idea www.vertical-endeavour.com/forum/drakensberg-trips/55700-mlambonja-pass-elephant-gully-cockade-pass.html
