The Bell Traverse

Hi there,

I've done the BT 3 times since November of last year. PM me your email address and I'll send you my GPS tracks and photos of the exposed sections as well as tips for the confusing part of the path as Riaang has indicated.

The BT is a personal favourite of mine and I highly recommend taking the "perceived" risk of doing this route on face value only. It is an awesome route and with a little caution can be super rewarding.

Cheers

I was just about to post this question and noticed it on the forum. Hallelujah!
A part of the Berg I don't know that well and I'd be keen on all that info via email as well.
@supertramp - Hoping it's okay for me to send my email address as well.

@o32jenGP: have merged your post with this main thread on the Bell Traverse. There is a separate thread on Itineraries for doing the Bell Traverse , which seems to get more discussion than the actual traverse itself and references many other trails, so we keep it separate. There may be some helpful info for you on these two threads.

Hi @o32jenGP & kbresler,

Ok cool, I've made you a PDF write-up of all the exposed sections and navigational tips for the route. They should be in your inbox.

Enjoy. It is such an epic part of the Berg.

Cheers

Just another tip:

I do recommend that you rather go down the BT (starting from Twins Cave). I've done it both ways and somehow the exposed sections and navigation feels easier going down. Another reason being that the most beautiful part of the route lies between Twins Cave and Buggers Gully. With the clouds usually starting out low down in the morning your chances of experiencing the awesome views are higher if you do this part first thing in the day. Going up you are more likely to reach this part when the clouds have come in.

I have been playing with doing the bell traverse - the problem is I will be alone, reading the posts I just could not make up my mind one way or the other...

Then found this... the preview...

the the full version...

Well this has just cleared up any issues I had. That entrance to Rolands cave is a real concern... :woohoo: Bell Traverse looks tame all things considered

As always respect to the berg...

First time I've ever seen hikers wearing helmets going up & down passes!
Look for Viking's video on the Rolands ledge

Not really. I think the short little scramble on the slopes of Mitre on the Bell Traverse is harder (more technical) than the whole walk in to Roland's Cave, however the consequences of a fall at Roland's Cave are probably more serious.

That wide angle GoPro footage tends to make things look more hectic than really are.

Check it out:

Ever since baboons nearly killed me in a pass (bumping rocks off cliffs) about 4 years ago I wear a helmet for every pass in the berg. Ok not sani ;)

That sound of rocks whizzing past your head will give anyone nightmares, and make you think twice about not wearing a helmet.
