Campsite and contour path below Cathedral Peak

Hi there, can anyone tell me if this campsite (attached)still exists and if the path from orange peel gap down to this site and around to one tree hill is well used? Been caught out a few times recently with overgrown/non existent old paths and campsites.

 Thanks a lot

I took a group through there from Xeni's side in September 2021.. Although the route is patchy in some areas and quite rough in the area you mark the campsite it is doable. Expect some brush scratches on open legs but overall doable. The route is not in frequent use and a regular campsite probably does not exist but there should be a reasonable are to pitch camp in the general area of the campsite in your map. The stream there was dry in September but should be flowing well now.

I was in this area 2 weeks ago, and can comment on the 1Treehill path. We walked up 1TreeHill all the way up Mlambonja pass, and the path is pretty clear. Glancing across to the section you are enquiring about, the path looked to be in a good condition from where it joins up with the 1Treehill path. On our last hike up Orange peel gap it also looked fine from what I could see from this vantage point. This entire section is basically open grassland, devoid of scrubs and trees so it should be fine. No idea about the campsite you have circled though, but there are many flat areas you can pitch a tent along the path. Also, if you go a bit further you can camp at the designated camping spot under the large tree near where the 1TreeHill path drops down to the Mlambonja river, about 300 - 400m downstream.

I hiked that route of contour path end of January. The river in the valley is flowing strongly and the campsite is supposed to be there somewhere. The area is very overgrown. A couple of years ago I marked the spot for possibly one tent but even that is overgrown now. Further along up the hill toward One Tree Hill, the path disappears and we got into the thick of it until we got back onto the path. Its a section where you cross the river and the opposite bank is very steep, having to go around and we got stuck. But with perseverance we climbed back up to the path.

The route is still doable but camping not where its marked on the map. The closest you can camp is One Tree Hill.

Thanks so much for the info. That helps a lot, I’ll probably give the campsite on 1 tree a go.
