My hiking plans, will they work? Could they be improved?

Hi all, I hope you are doing well.

I'm looking to do a weekend hike somewhere in February/March/April. The objective is to take along some of my friends who have not done any Berg hiking, and introduce them to the wonders of Beg passes and Escarpment-south-facing-cave sleeping. I've done a GT and a half, the others have no Berg experience that I know of. We will be leaving from PTA/JHB.

This is my plan:
Day 0: Drive from Gauteng park at Cathedral peak (where is the best place to leave a car?). Hike up to Ribbon Falls cave (or something similar?).
Day 1: Hike up Organ Pipes pass sleep in a cave, possibly Roland's cave or one of the Ndumeni caves. I've never seen any of these caves, so I would appreciate suggestions.
Day 2: Hike towards and summit Cleft peak. Heading on to Easter cave.
Day 3: Hike down Mlambonja Pass towards Cathedral peak hotel. Would we be able to do this and make a drive home (we are willing to drive at night)? Otherwise we might sleep in a cave like Barker's chalet or Sherman's cave.

So my basic questions are:
1. Is this doable? Like I said, I'm pretty handy at navigating the Berg these days, but the others will be quite inexperienced, but very fit in a general sense.
2. Any improvements to recommend?

I'm also open to suggestions for completely different routes, i.e. in the Mweni area.

Hi Wandelaar
A few loose comments:
  1. You can leave your car at the car park at the Catherdral Peak boom gate parking area (behind or next to the guard house.
  2. Rolands cave is very exposed - especially the walk/scramble in. First time hikers and people with even mild vertigo could have trouble. Ndumeni caves a better option if this is the case. A GPS with co-ordinates of the caves will help to find them.
  3. I would rather head towards Twins cave which puts you closer to the head of Mhambonjwa pass to shorten your last day..
  4. From Twins to Catherdral peak Hotel is a solid 5-7 hour day depending on fitness levels.

Hi Wandelaar,

Welcome on VE!

Is your route suggestion very doable. Absoutely! If everyone is very fit you can do it in half this time, but for first timers 3 Days is a good alternative, if only to spend more time in the Berg.

Day 0 : We normally leave our vehicles at the guest parking at Cathedral Peak Hotel. Closest to your start and ending point and, in my experience, safe. Ribbon falls is a good first day sleepover spot, especially for a late arrival. You can also tent on the lower berg itself, closer to Organ Pipes pass.
Day 1: Rolands is good, but exposed, so if there are people in your group with a fear of heights, definitely stay away. Also in wet, snowy, icy weather i'd give this cave a miss. You can tent at a couple of spots in this area, from closer to Rolands to near Castle Buttress, but you can also go for one or more of the Upper Ndumeni caves. The 2 bottom ones offer very little in terms of protection, so I wouldn't even consider them in rainy weather. Ok, so how to get to the caves. The First Ndumeni cave is nearly directly above Rolands cave, about 30m or so higher in elevation. When you are close to the section where you start the walk-in to Rolands cave, just go higher up through the rockband. The cave is at the base of the uppermost rock band on Ndumeni dome. It's small, but nice, fitting max 3 small people. Realistically 2 people only if comfort is a requirement. The second Upper Ndumeni cave is also at the base of the rockband. Simply walk about 200m or so from cave 1 in a western direction. It's on your left. The cave entrance is quite small and a bt hidden away and a bit higher up than what you'd expect. If you get to the furthest end of the rockband where you start losing height, you've gone too far and have missed it. You can comfortably fit 4 adults in here and offers better shelter than the one above Rolands.
You can also consider a bunch of caves  near the top of Mlambonja pass. Easter cave is an option (typically cold and wet), but you also have Christmas pass cave (which is more of a large overhang). Then you have Twins and Twins annex, and there are also 2 other caves in the rockbands above Twins, but they are not very nice. Nice camping spots on the escarpment as well.
Day 3: a fast under 4 hour trip, or a slow and easy 7 hour trip back to the hotel. Barker and Shermans is an option, although a bit out of your way and you will have to gain a bit of altitude again to get to them.

You don't mention taking tents along. Do consider it, because if all the caves are taken, or unusble for whatever reason, and it rains, your hike could turn into a much less fun experience, especially for first timers. If no tent, then at least take some other form of shelter like a tarp, survival bag or bivvy bag. I don't like taking a tent along (heavy and I don't fit in them!), but for summer escarpment hiking I take a tent, always. In winter I'll leave the tent and take a bivvybag, but not for rainy weather.

Yes you can also consider the Mnwenin area (the typical Mnweni Rockeries loop for instance), but I think your current route selection is good.

Enjoy!!!

Thanks for the replies. Good advice and good qualitative info.

As for the tents: my initial thought was to go without, but I suppose we could do split carries with our 2-person hiking tents, which shouldn't weigh too much, as a backup.
