Thanks for the thorough write-up & pics ghaz. This hike was a step up for me in terms of pace & exploration (thankfully I had my lightest pack so far: 11,3kg plus water at the start) and I really enjoyed it. As well as being a bottomless source of mountain information, ghaz is also a very sharp navigator which helped to ensure that we got where we wanted to go quickly and efficiently.
A few notes on the wildlife we saw:
A few notes on the wildlife we saw:
- Bird’s Nest Cave has a family of starlings raising chicks in it;
- On the way up the lower reaches of Nhlangeni pass on Saturday, before we were enshrouded in mist, we saw a Verreaux (Black) Eagle, the first I have seen in the Berg;
- Ascending the steep ridge up Nhlangeni I saw a 15cm long thin sandy-grey snake, it moved at pace to get out of my way;
- Several Blue-headed Lizards basked in the sun and watched with interest as we attempted to make Sehonghong Cave habitable;
- On Sunday when traversing out of the KaNtuba valley we startled three francolin type birds, guessing that were either Redwing or Greywing Francolin;
- Descending further on the ridge towards Bird’s Nest Cave, a Grey Rhebok came charging down the slope, crossing our path en route; a bit further on, we saw the three antelope mentioned by ghaz which on reflection I think were also Grey Rhebok;
- Also while descending towards the Nhlangeni valley, we were approaching a side gully and a large Black-backed Jackal shot out of the longer grass just ahead of us, and a bit further in a different gully a Mountain Reedbuck also rushed out from where it was hiding in the tall grass just ahead of us.

Hi. Do you perhaps have coordinates for your "bivvy shelter" please?
